Revenue Tax Auditor I (NS)
The North Carolina Department of Revenue is committed to excellence in tax administration, ensuring secure and efficient collection of revenue to fund vital public services. This full‑time, permanent position enables you to transition your accounting expertise into public service, helping to ensure taxpayers comply with North Carolina tax laws and support state operations.
Tax Auditors work out of the Raleigh Service Center on a hybrid remote schedule and receive State Benefits including health insurance, paid vacation, paid sick time, paid holidays, and retirement. The minimum starting salary is $54,137, with a recruitment range of $54,137 to $84,388.
Key Responsibilities- Examine individual income tax returns and records to ensure compliance with NC laws.
- Review and audit returns, making adjustments based on available accounting records.
- Maintain an audit plan, including selecting audit candidates, scheduling taxpayer interviews, reviewing provided records, and preparing and submitting audit reports.
- Communicate complex and technical information to taxpayers in a timely and effective manner.
- Work efficiently to meet audit deadlines and quality standards.
- Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and Income Tax.
- Basic proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software.
- Basic knowledge of auditing and accounting principles and practices.
Effective July 1, 2025, the minimum qualifications are met by candidates with the minimum education and experience listed here. Knowledge, skills, and abilities listed are management preferences used to screen applicants.
Minimum Education and ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Accounting or a related field with at least twelve semester hours of accounting from an accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Related fields considered include Accounting, Business Administration, Business Law, Business Management, Economics, Finance, Public Administration, and Tax.
A transcript (official or unofficial) must accompany the application. Applications without a transcript will be considered incomplete, unless the applicant is a current DOR Tax Auditor.
Compensation & BenefitsRecruitment Range: $54,137 - $84,388

This position is subject to federal and state criminal background checks, including fingerprinting and verification of tax compliance. “Tax compliance” means filing and paying all NC State taxes owed each year up to the current calendar year and maintaining a non‑delinquent payment status.
