Accountant I (S)
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) is seeking a well‑rounded, focused‑driven individual to join our HR Team as an Accountant I. The Accountant I position plays a vital role in the day‑to‑day operations of the NCSHP Fiscal Section, responsible for maintaining, examining, and analyzing financial records to ensure accuracy and compliance with state and federal regulations.
Key Responsibilities- Provide assistance and coding for appropriate accounts and funding sources (cost centers).
- Assist with preparing year‑end financial statements for the Office of the State Auditor.
- Monitor and assist with budgets, grants, and asset forfeiture funds.
- Review general ledger entries to see if corrections are needed.
- P‑Card support and reconciliation.
- Provide customer service to vendors regarding payments.
- Assist with vendor set‑up.
- Assist with AR customer set‑up and collections.
- Prepare and analyze ad hoc reports.
- Minimum education:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, finance, public administration, or related discipline with 18 semester hours of accounting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. - Preferred:
- Working knowledge of accounting methods, procedures, and practices.
- Experience with the North Carolina Financial System (NCFS).
- Knowledge of GAAP and/or practices used by NC State agencies.
- Ability to analyze and correct financial problems, perform bank and subsidiary reconciliations, and post GL entries accurately and timely.
- Proficiency with technology, financial systems, and software packages to prepare interpretive or analytical accounting and/or financial reports.
- Ability to work, prioritize, and problem‑solve independently.
- Effective oral and written communication.
- Ability to work with complex spreadsheets.
- Ability to examine accounting records to assure adherence to accounting standards and regulations.
Typical work schedule:
Monday‑Friday; 8:00am‑5:00pm. Qualified applicants must undergo and successfully pass a Criminal Background Investigation and Drug Screening Test.
