Accountant I (NS) – Division Employment Security, Department of Commerce
The North Carolina Department of Commerce is hiring an Accountant I (NS) in the Unemployment Insurance Tax Department. This is a full‑time (40 hours per week) position with State benefits and a recruitment range of $50,088 – $62,767

- Supervise staff in the Accounting Section responsible for returned payments, reimbursable employer accounts, and the research and correction of electronic reports and payments.
- Collaborate with the central office Tax Department and the Document Payment Processing Unit to assist with electronic payments.
- Conduct periodic quality assurance reviews of the work performed by various units within the central office Tax Department.
- Account for attached claims pre‑payments and voluntary contributions.
- Provide data to the Commerce Finance Center for the Job Development Investment Grant Program.
- Participate in the annual experience‑rating process, assigning employer tax rates for over 200,000 employers in North Carolina.
- Assist in the development and implementation of new technologies, working with internal IT staff and external vendors.
- Analyze complex situations and determine appropriate resolutions for internal staff and external customers.
- Demonstrated experience compiling, monitoring, examining, and interpreting moderately complex financial statements, reports, or accounts.
- Experience planning, assigning, and supervising the work of subordinate employees.
- Experience developing, evaluating, and implementing changes to accounting systems and processes.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with agency personnel and the public.
- Knowledge of applicable information technology and internal controls relevant to the work.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States; no visa sponsorship provided.
