Summary

Balfour Beatty is seeking a Heavy Civil Assistant Superintendent to join our Carolinas Division in Raleigh. The ideal candidate will be a motivated and organized construction professional eager to grow their career in field leadership while supporting complex heavy civil and infrastructure projects. This role assists in managing daily field operations, subcontractor coordination, safety compliance, quality control, and project execution under the direction of the Superintendent.

As an Assistant Superintendent, you'll help coordinate earthwork, grading, utility, paving, and infrastructure activities while ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards of quality. Working closely with the Superintendent and Project Manager, you'll gain hands-on experience in all aspects of heavy civil construction management while contributing to Balfour Beatty's commitment to operational excellence and our Zero Harm safety culture.

While this is intended to be a long-term career opportunity with continued advancement and future project assignments, the successful candidate will initially support the RDU Runway Project, managing earthwork subcontractors and assigned portions of the project. The position requires flexibility to work both day and night shifts to accommodate airport operations, and candidates must be eligible to obtain airport security badging and successfully complete required background checks.

Essential Functions

Field Coordination:
Assist the Superintendent in overseeing daily construction activities, coordinating subcontractors, and managing assigned work areas to maintain project schedules, quality standards, and productivity.

Safety Management:
Promote Balfour Beatty's Zero Harm culture by leading safety meetings, conducting site inspections, and ensuring compliance with OSHA requirements, environmental regulations, and airport safety protocols.

Planning & Scheduling:
Participate in pull planning and scheduling meetings, monitor progress, maintain look-ahead schedules, and coordinate work sequencing to minimize impacts on ongoing airport operations.

Earthwork & Civil Operations:
Support construction activities involving grading, excavation, utilities, drainage systems, paving, and other heavy civil infrastructure components while coordinating multiple subcontractors.

Project Start-Up & Site Logistics:
Assist with mobilization, traffic control planning, temporary utilities, staging areas, erosion control measures, and site logistics to ensure efficient project execution.

Quality Assurance:
Verify work complies with contract documents, specifications, and project requirements; coordinate inspections and testing, document deficiencies, and assist with quality control processes.

Subcontractor Management:
Conduct orientations, monitor subcontractor performance, review daily reports, and ensure adherence to project schedules and safety expectations.

Documentation & Communication:
Maintain accurate field documentation, daily reports, inspection records, and project communications while collaborating closely with the Project Manager and Superintendent.

Closeout & Turnover:
Support punch list completion, final inspections, project demobilization, and turnover documentation to ensure successful project closeout.

Collaboration:

Provide field support to Project Engineers and other team members while fostering collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
