Commercial Building Inspector – Travel
Traveling Commercial Building Inspectors are responsible for conducting field inspections of retail box stores across the United States before, during, and after remodel projects. The role blends nationwide travel with home‑office work. Inspectors assess building condition, identify coating and sealant problems, conduct diagnostic tests, gather measurement data, take notes and photographs, and produce quality assurance reports.
Key Responsibilities- Identify exterior coating, sealant, and caulking problems.
- Conduct and record results of building diagnostic tests on floors, exterior walls, and roofs.
- Gather building condition data and measurements of building components and defects.
- Take field notes and photographs and summarize results electronically.
- Interface with onsite store managers, restoration contractors, and complete quality assurance reports.
- Examine building envelope for design or construction deficiencies.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Building Construction or related field – preferred.
- Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) Basic coatings credential – preferred.
- Ability to travel extensively (~70% of the time, 2‑week rotations, up to 4 weeks).
- Experience with insurance property inspections, catastrophe inspections, or roof inspection is highly transferable.
- Experience reading, interpreting, and revising blueprints or as‑built drawings using software such as Bluebeam, AutoCAD, or Autodesk – desired.
- Experience with construction, repair, painting, and/or renovation of retail buildings.
- Experience with concrete slabs, masonry construction, and/or roofing – preferred.
- Experience using a laptop and iPad.
- Proficiency with Word and Excel.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. (IRS allowable mileage is paid.)
- Use of company vehicles is available; personal vehicle use may be required with paid mileage.
- Significant walking around project sites.
- Ability to sit/drive for periods of time.
- Ability to climb ladders and read data while on a ladder.
- Manual dexterity for handling small objects, instruments, or gauges.
- Ability to lift 40 pounds safely.
- Color perception and visual acuity for close, distance, and depth vision.
Drug testing and a criminal background check will be conducted.
