The internship runs from May 18 through August 7, 2026. Interns will work 20-30 hours per week in a hybrid environment, combining virtual work with in-person engagement.
Ideal Candidate will:
* Be motivated and dependable, and detail oriented
* Have an interest in community engagement and public service
* Have experience creating short videos for social media
* Possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills
* Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communications skills
* Be familiar with various social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X and You Tube)
* Be able to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines
* Have flexibility to assist during evening or weekend hours (as needed)
Through workshops, mentorship, hands-on projects, and networking opportunities, the intern will gain experience in:
* Public sector communications and engagement
* Municipal government processes and planning initiatives
* Exposure to governing body, board/commission and departmental meetings
* Skills in public administration and community outreach
* The City of Raleigh Planning and Development Department supports the city's growth and development through planning, zoning, building safety, urban projects, and business strategy
Hiring Range:
$17.85 per hour (undergraduate students)
$21.00 per hour (graduate students)

* Create engaging content and short videos for social media platforms
* Assist with planning and executing public meetings and events
* Conduct research to support communication and outreach strategies
* Participate in brainstorming sessions for campaigns and initiatives
* Engage with the public during events and outreach activities
* Draft press releases and other written materials
* Support community engagement and marketing efforts across multiple projects
* Take photos and/or video at engagement events
Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program and a student in good academic standing. Preference for students enrolled in a program leading to a degree in City and Regional Planning, Urban Design, Public Policy, Public Administration, or Communications.
No previous office experience required.
Knowledge of:
* Microsoft 365 software
* Adobe Creative Suite (helpful but not required)
* Basic principles of social media engagement and content creation
* Understanding of community outreach and public engagement strategies
* Familiarity with video editing tools or apps (e.g., Canva, Cap Cut, iMovie)
Skill in:
* Strong writing and editing skills for various audiences
* Ability to create engaging visual and video content for social platforms
* Organizational skills to manage multiple projects and deadlines
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills
* Basic research and analytical skills to support outreach strategies
Ability to:
* Work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
* Learn new software and adapt to changing priorities quickly
* Interact professionally with staff, community members, and stakeholders
* Maintain attention to detail while juggling multiple assignments
* Represent the department positively during public events
