Overview

The Sound Engineer provides on-site management for a wide variety of events and oversees assigned components ensuring that all clients and patrons have a positive experience. Sound Engineer manages the technical aspects of sound for recordings, live performances, films, and broadcasts. The incumbent will operate, set up, and troubleshoot equipment—such as microphones, mixers, and digital audio workstations—to record, edit, and mix audio, ensuring high-quality, balanced sound.

Their primary goal is to achieve the desired artistic vision and technical standards for audience consumption.

Responsibilities
  • Primary contact for setting up and testing sound equipment before events, broadcasts or recordings.
  • Recording & Production:
    Setting up microphones and capturing audio in studios or on location.
  • Mixing & Editing:
    Balancing sound levels, applying equalization, and using effects to produce a final, polished product.
  • Live Sound Reinforcement:
    Managing sound for concerts, theater, or conferences, including Front of House (FOH) and monitor mixing.
  • Equipment Maintenance:
    Assembling, testing, and troubleshooting audio gear (mixers, amplifiers, speakers).
  • Collaboration:

    Working with producers, directors, and performers to achieve the desired sonic experience.
Core Skills & Requirements
  • Technical Proficiency:
    Deep understanding of sound theory, digital audio workstations (DAWs), and audio hardware.
  • Auditory

    Skills:

    A keen ear for detail to identify and correct audio imbalances or imperfections.
  • Problem-Solving:
    Ability to resolve technical issues quickly under pressure.
  • Communication:
    Strong team-working skills to coordinate with production staff.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma;
    Degree in audio/sound engineering or related field is a plus.
  • Proven experience as a sound engineer
  • Technical expertise in sound engineering techniques (e.g. equalization)
  • Working knowledge of recording software and hardware
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups.
  • Proficiency with event management software, Microsoft Office Suite, and social media platforms.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as required by event schedules.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting events in a college or university environment.
  • Familiarity with Yamaha M7CL is a plus.
Work Environment

Work is performed in a professional office and campus event settings. The position involves direct interaction with clients, campus partners, and external vendors. Some weekend and evening work is required.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during event coverage.
  • Ability to lift or move materials up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to travel between multiple event sites on campus.
