About the Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic Assistant Editor who has experience proofreading/copyediting and writing about clinical and professional topics for a medical audience, who enjoys learning about healthcare topics and who can report on these issues coherently and accurately. This person should be detail oriented and have a keen sense of deadlines, be highly efficient and organized, and excel at managing myriad tasks related to publishing a news magazine and its related digital products.
The Assistant Editor will provide editorial and administrative support for The Rheumatologist and associated website, enewsletters and audio‑visual productions.
Job Responsibilities- Edit and post short videos and other types of content to the-rheumatologist.org in Word Press.
- Manage the day‑to‑day enewsletter portfolio for The Rheumatologist:
Write short, engaging content summaries and subject lines; build enewsletters in a proprietary builder; request enewsletter tests, monitor approvals and ensure on‑time deployments. - Format articles as assigned to prepare them for developmental and structural editing by the Editor and editorial team members.
- Review page proofs as assigned to ensure a high level of editorial and design quality is maintained. Enter corrections into InDesign files as needed.
- Report on/from society or topical meetings, as assigned.
- Provide administrative support by pulling detailed email metric reports from the dashboard to support email campaign goals and initiatives; tracking and collecting copyright transfer agreements and other paperwork; and completing research, administrative, and other editorial tasks as assigned.
- Journalism, English or other liberal arts degree OR a science/medical degree and experience in publishing or journalism.
- One or two years of demonstrated skill editing/copyediting and writing for magazines or newsletters with a professional audience.
- Experience working independently without close supervision and ability to manage their own workload, with strong organizational skills.
- Expert knowledge of English grammar and familiarity with AP style guidelines preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively and accurately, both verbally and in writing.
- Experience editing videos in iMovie.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Experience working in InDesign or similar page layout program.
- Experience with Word Press or similar digital content platform.
- Experience writing or editing for a medical audience.
- Knowledge of AP style.
