Architectural Campus Planner

This role guides long‑term development, strategic initiatives, and space planning across a dynamic university campus. The position provides expertise for campus planning and NCSU Colleges, works closely with Facilities Division units and stakeholders, and may manage outside designers, produce in‑house studies, and provide data analysis for decision‑making.

• Translate the university’s strategic plan into campus facilities to meet its goals and objectives.
• Provide design solutions for architectural, interior, and engineering planning issues essential to the university’s physical development needs.
• Analyze, document, and develop planning projects, policies, and informal project designs to address campus needs, including:
  • Developing facilities planning and design strategies for building architecture and interior spaces.
  • Developing space programs and conducting space analysis.
  • Leading architectural and space studies, coordinating with building (MEP) and lab systems.
  • Identifying and developing alternative design options.
  • Recommending planning and design solutions guided by the Physical Master Plan.
• Assist in implementing the Physical Master Plan, focusing on architecture, interior, and land‑use design through schematic designs, feasibility studies, and development plans.
• Support planning and design of infrastructure, mobility support systems, ADA accessibility, and other general facilities functions.
• Coordinate with campus leadership, architects, engineers, and industry professionals to assemble stakeholders for decision‑making.
• Work independently with complex, variable‑heavy assignments that may lack precedent and directly impact life, health, safety, or the environment.
• Provide consultation, evaluation, planning, design, review, and approval of campus development plans, building utilities, site plans, mapping, and infrastructure; may oversee major campus planning efforts and manage implementation in accordance with codes and regulations.
• Represent the university in public contacts, explaining planning or design projects to administrators, college administrations, regulatory bodies, and building committees.

• Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Must be accredited institution graduate; some positions may require licensure from the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

• Strong working knowledge of architectural and/or engineering principles.
• In‑depth knowledge of university planning efforts, including master planning, architectural and interior design, space programming, and project development.
• Proven experience in developing planning and design strategies for varied building types.
• Ability to influence design solutions from programmatic requirements.
• Familiarity with building codes and standards in government or university environments.
• Proficient knowledge of standard design and construction practices.
• Manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively.
• Use goals to guide actions and create detailed action plans.
• Experience with capital project budgeting and cost estimation.
• Ability to evaluate, develop, and manage processes, procedures, and guidelines related to campus planning and development.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with a variety of stakeholders and campus leadership.
• Facilitate a proactive, collaborative, and transparent planning process.
• Proficient computer skills, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and information‑collection software.

• Licensed architect or Certified Interior Designer with a minimum of five years of professional experience.
• Experience with architectural design of complex projects, strategic planning for the physical campus, and/or space planning & programming.
• Experience with university design and planning projects, either as a consultant or from institutional experience.
