The GP Academy Regional Technical Trainer is responsible for delivering regional high-quality, hands-on training to new and experienced technicians across Gregory Poole's apprenticeship program, advanced Caterpillar technician training programs, and other technical development initiatives. This role requires a strong technical background, a passion for teaching, and the flexibility to cross-train in multiple disciplines in multiple on-site locations .
Instruction & Facilitation- Deliver instructor-led training for the Gregory Poole Apprenticeship Program, focusing on foundational skills, safety, customer training and equipment systems
- Facilitate advanced Caterpillar Technician training, including diagnostics, hydraulics, electronics, and powertrain systems
- Crosstrain and deliver instruction in additional areas Such as power systems, Sitech, rental allied, material handling or emerging technologies (e.g., electric or autonomous equipment)
- Deliver training at least 3 days per week
- Maintain a minimum instructor evaluation average score of 4.5
- Collaborate with subject matter experts, instructional designer and OEM professionals to develop and update training materials, lesson plans, and assessments
- Work with the instructional designer to c ustomize content to meet the needs of different learner levels and business units
- Ensure training content aligns with Caterpillar standards, industry certifications, and Gregory Poole's operational needs
- Provide a leadership role for work through knowledge and specialization/s
- Work with complex, advanced technical projects or business issues requiring state-of-the-art technical and/or industry knowledge and colla borate for a holistic approach
- C ollaborate with outside vendors as necessary
- Assume a leadership role for the work group and/or Technical Trainer Team
- Mentor & team teach with new trainers as well as audit their classes
- Provide coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback to learners
- Assess learner progress through practical evaluations, written tests, and hands-on demonstration s
- Serve as TCG (Technician Career Guide) task performance validator in support of technician development
- Maintain training equipment, tools, and classroom environments
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and training protocols
- Track attendance, certifications, and training records in the LMS
- Serve as the official point of contact and liaison for regional high schools and community college programs, fostering collaboration and coordination
- Participate in school advisory boards providing guidance on training topics and GP apprenticeship development
- Review pre and post class assessments and conduct needs assessments with branch managers to determine training gaps and new class opportunities
- Review hands-on projects and submit performance reports to evaluat e demonstrated TCG competencies if rework has been required
- Review rework trends at assigned branch based on tech level to determine improvement opportunities to curriculum
- Solicit 360 feedback from stakeholders from region
Associate's or bachelor's degree in Diesel Technology, Industrial Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience) .
Work Experience- 7-10+ years of experience as a technician or technical trainer in heavy equipment, power systems, or related industries.
- Strong knowledge of Caterpillar equipment and systems preferred.
- Experience with instructional delivery, adult learning principles, and hands-on training.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Learning Management Systems (LMS).
- Have the ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. of materials.
- Ongoing p rofessional development requirements through monthly hands-on work with senior technicians on multiple complex equipment platforms to develop the practical proficiency necessary to support the training curriculum .
- Caterpillar Instructor Accreditation or OEM training certifications strongly preferred; or gain certification within 6-12 months of hire date.
- Experience with eLearning tools or blended learning environments. M ACS instructor certification and/or gain certification within 6-12 months of hire date.
- Ability to travel to multiple Gregory Poole branch location s or a central location weekly for training purposes.
- Ability to travel to regional community colleges as necessary.
- Spanish fluency is a plus.
- Must hold a valid driver's license.
