Based in downtown Raleigh, the Historic Sites Assistant Director plays an integral role in interpretating and preserving multiple historic sites. Whether developing education programs, creating new special events, planning a summer camp program, working with the community and volunteers, or researching exhibits, the Historic Sites Assistant Director will play a key role in telling the story of Raleigh to the over 50,000 visitors who frequent one of our sites each year.

The Historic Sites Assistant Director is a professional, supervisory position that directs the public programs for HRM sites including Mordecai Historic Park, Borden Building, Tucker House, Latta University Historic Park, and the Raleigh Trolleys. This position will supervise paid part‑time staff as well as volunteer personnel. This position will be responsible for decisions related to all programs at the sites.

Position requires high level of customer service to both external and internal customers. The position will have some responsibility across all HRM sites and programs and will report to the HRM Historic Sites Director.

We are seeking someone who is passionate about history and excited to teach the public about the past. You will need to be a collaborative team player and flexible to meet the needs of the day as we work on public programs, school field trips, special events, rentals, and exhibits. Success in this role requires initiative, creativity, and motivation to connect with the surrounding community and deliver a wide range of unique experiences.

No two days are the same, so the ability to prioritize tasks, adapt to changing circumstances, and communicate effectively is essential.

About Us:

Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department’s mission is to connect and enrich our community through exceptional experiences. The Historic Sites section is based out of Mordecai Historic Park which is home to the oldest house in Raleigh on its original location. The park is also home to several other historic buildings, most prominently the birthplace of Andrew Johnson. The other historic properties managed by this section are the Tucker House which is a neo‑classic revival style home built in 1914 and Latta University Historic Park which is the site of the former Latta University, an African‑American coeducational institution founded by the Reverend Latta which served the community from 1892‑1920.

The Borden Building which is formerly part of the historic Methodist Home for Children in Fred Fletcher Park and the Raleigh Trolleys which are used for tours, special programs, and rentals are also administrated by this section. Staff direct a variety of educational, recreational, and cultural programs and special events including elementary aged summer camps, lectures, and large‑scale special events.

  • Plans, organizes, directs, and supervises participants in a variety of classes, programs, and events that are social, historic, educational, and/or cultural at Mordecai Historic Park, Borden Building, Tucker House, Latta University Historic Park, and the Raleigh Trolleys.
  • Serves as volunteer coordinator and programming director.
  • Assists in training, supervising, and coordinating the schedules of part‑time staff, volunteers, youth employees, and others.
  • Help staff City Council appointed HRM Advisory Board.
  • Work with HRM staff to research, plan, and execute events and programs in support of HRM facilities.
  • Helps conduct public relations for the Historic Sites section; advises citizens of programs and activities offered; prepares bulletins, pamphlets, brochures, website, and newsletters relating to programs.
  • Departmental responsibility as liaison for programs and subject matter expert for internal and external groups.
