Position: UTS - Design Camp Instructor 2026

Design Camp is an annual series of pre-college summer programs offered at NC State University College of Design to high school and middle school students. Design Camp informs students about college study in design and raises awareness of the impact of design in all aspects of our everyday lives.

Having operated for over forty years, the Design Camp at NC State College of Design has provided the spark and fuel of inspiration for thousands of aspiring designers, including some who have gone on to national and international success in their field. Design Camp changes the lives of not only its campers but has proved to be a wonderful, life changing experience for hundreds of College of Design faculty, staff and students who have worked for the program over the years.

Design Camp students work with camp instructors and teaching assistants on projects involving disciplines offered at the college:
Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning, Graphic and Experience Design, Industrial Design, and Media Arts, Design and Technology.

Instructors develop studio projects in response to a different theme each year, challenging students to explore their creativity and critical‑thinking skills while pushing them to try a range of techniques and media. In addition to studio projects, students will attend special presentations and participate in creative group challenges, hosted by Design Lab staff.

Primary Purpose of Position

Instructors are responsible for teaching campers in a single studio for one or more weeks of camp. Candidates may be hired to teach Middle School Day Camps (rising 6th–8th graders), Design Fundamentals Day Camp (rising 8th–9th graders), High School Explorations Day Camp (rising 9th–12th graders), High School Residential Camps (rising 10th–12th graders), Design Connections Residential (rising 10th–12th graders), and/or Design Immersions (rising 11th–12th graders).

Middle School Day Camps, Design Fundamentals Day Camp, and Design Connections Residential are interdisciplinary studios, while High School Explorations Day Camp, High School Residential Camps, and Design Immersions are discipline‑specific. Instructors are typically assigned a Teaching Assistant (TA) with the same or a closely related design discipline. Co‑teaching pairs may be assigned in certain cases. When applicable, potential co‑instructor pairs will be contacted and consulted prior to finalizing any co‑teaching arrangement.

Teaching Assistant (TA) assignments are determined solely by program needs.

Instructors will follow the Design Camp curriculum guidelines provided to them and develop age‑appropriate projects that align with the year’s Design Camp theme. Projects should appropriately represent the College of Design and its disciplines in a way that is accessible and engaging for the assigned age group.
