Job Duties
The Instructor and Training Specialist implements ITRE’s “E” for Education, developing, directing, and instructing online and live courses. Courses include the Fundamental Engineering Principles (FEP) program, the Highway Engineering Concepts (HEC) course, FE and PE exam review courses, and the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) courses for NCDOT employees, private‑sector employees, and national DOTs.
Responsibilities include:
- Instruct, assess, and support FEP and HEC courses, including grading, curriculum design, and development of assessment tools.
- Assist in designing and delivering in‑person and Canvas‑based online courses for FE and PE exam review programs.
- Collaborate with NCDOT, state and municipal agencies, and private‑sector engineering partners to develop innovative, pedagogically sound approaches to teaching complex technical content.
- Build and maintain collaborative networks of current and former students, instructors, and staff across ITRE to support a team‑oriented learning environment.
- Support the transition of course materials across platforms, media formats, and learning management systems.
- Contribute to outreach through presentations, workshops, online discussions, and conference participation.
This role is well suited for someone who enjoys teaching, presenting, relationship‑building, and seeing learners succeed.
Other ResponsibilitiesOccasional duties may arise from project work or additional classroom teaching.
QualificationsMinimum Education and Experience
Post‑baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree with additional professional training and experience in construction, transportation, or a related engineering discipline may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

- Excellent communication skills (public speaking) in written and spoken English.
- Strong organizational skills; detail‑oriented; works well under minimal supervision.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- High level of initiative and ability to multi‑task.
- Proficient in giving presentations with good communication and facilitation skills.
- Proficient with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related Google applications.
