Academic and Tour Programs Manager at The Columbus Museum
The Academic and Tour Programs Manager at The Columbus Museum manages the guided tour program, docent corps, and academic outreach programming for PreK-12 grade audiences. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering exceptional guided tour experiences that engage diverse audiences and contribute to the Museum’s mission. This position requires a strong background in curriculum-based education, current education theories and methodologies, and object-based teaching with an emphasis in art and history education.
Starting salary for this position will be between $45,000 - $50,000.
Led by the Director of Education and Engagement, the Education Department at The Columbus Museum also includes a Youth and Family Programs Manager, Community Outreach Coordinator, two part-time Gallery Teachers, and an active docent corps.
The Columbus Museum, accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, has collections of American art and historic artifacts related to the Chattahoochee Valley. Its grounds feature the Bradley-Olmsted Garden, designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm in the 1920s for homeowner and noted industrialist W.
C. Bradley. The museum is part of the Muscogee County School District, a relationship that offers unique opportunities for collaboration and partnerships. With a population of 200,000, Columbus is experiencing a renaissance that includes a thriving, beautiful, and historic downtown riverfront and many cultural amenities.
- Knowledge of American art and/or American history, museum education, object-based learning, child development, and curriculum-based education.
- Experience developing curriculum and/or tour plans that align with state learning standards and working closely with teachers to meet curriculum goals.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking.
- Ability to work accurately and independently, showing good judgement in decision making.
- Ability to interpret Museum collections and exhibitions and make curricular connections through a wide range of programs for school and university audiences.
- A master’s degree in art history, history, museum education, or art education is preferred, but experience in the field may be substituted.
- Two to three years’ experience in museum education and/or Pre‑K-12 teaching experience required. Experience supervising staff and/or volunteers is preferred.
