Job DescriptionATHLETIC COACH (to include Cheerleading)
Under general supervision, assist the board in the fair and just discharge of its obligation to students and staff through the performance of the Head Coach role over and beyond the duties of a classroom teacher. Reports to the school principal and athletic director.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities- Thorough knowledge of all Athletic Policies approved by the Catawba County Schools Board of Education and responsible for implementation by the sports program staff.
- Knowledge of school system, state, and conference regulations; implement consistently and interpret for staff.
- Understand administrative line of command and refer grievances through proper channels; attend necessary public/staff/departmental meetings.
- Establish fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques for staff; design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to raise program awareness.
- Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth through clinic attendance.
- Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and analyze staff effectiveness at season’s end.
- Maintain discipline, adjust grievances, foster morale and cooperation.
- Assist Athletic Director in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
- Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices and coordinate with maintenance and school employees.
- Provide documentation for state and system requirements (physical examinations, parental consent, eligibility).
- Protect and maintain equipment sites; advise on policy, method, and procedural changes.
- Share training rules and unique regulations of the sport with each athlete.
- Monitor student athlete grades and conduct; ensure presence at all practices and games.
- Initiate programs and policies for injuries, medical attention, and emergencies; submit paperwork on injuries within 24 hours.
- Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
- Determine discipline procedures and contact parents regarding disciplinary actions.
- Assist athletes in college and advanced educational selection.
- Participate in budgeting with Athletic Director; recommend equipment specifications and maintain within budget.
- Accountable for equipment and fee collections; issue, store, recondition equipment and submit inventory.
- Mark and identify equipment before issuing or storing.
- Monitor equipment rooms and coaches’ offices; authorize access.
- Permit athletes to designated areas at appropriate times.
- Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games, ensuring cleanliness; maintain equipment.
- Secure doors, lights, windows, and locks upon leaving when custodians not on duty.
- Instill respect for equipment and property; organize pre‑season meetings.
- Promote sport within school by recruiting athletes and externally via media, community programs.
- Maintain good public relations with media, Booster Club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
- Present information to media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.
- Perform other duties assigned by school principal per Board policies.
Skills and Abilities
Must possess administrative and organizational skills, thorough knowledge of athletic policy and procedure, and ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and community.
Minimum Training and ExperienceEligible requires meeting North Carolina High School Athletic Association, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, Catawba County Board of Education requirements. Teacher license and employment as a teacher by the Board strongly preferred. Prior coaching experience in the assigned sport.
