D. H. Hill Jr. Library serves the main campus and houses special collections, a gallery, and spaces for making, digital media creation, data analysis and visualization, and collaboration. The Libraries invite applications for the Data Science Librarian. The Data Science Services (DSS) department (6 librarians, 1 library specialist, plus graduate student assistants) assists students and researchers with data science and visualization skills through expert consultation, workshops, and instruction.
DSS supports data lifecycle activities—collection, discovery, access, evaluation, cleaning, transformation, modeling, analysis, geospatial techniques, and visualization—and manages the Dataspace in the Hunt Library and the Data Experience Lab in Hill Library.

EssentialJob Duties
Provide expert consultative support, workshop training, and course‑integrated instruction in data science and visualization for students, faculty, and researchers. Lead DSS support around tabular data, spreadsheet software, and data visualizations. Design, develop, and deliver workshops individually and with faculty. Engage faculty, campus groups, and external partners to support data and visualization needs, conduct relevant outreach, and participate in events. Collaborate with colleagues on data initiatives, contribute to departmental projects, and mentor graduate student consultants as needed.
Integrate the Libraries’ Strategic Plan, support library planning, and serve on library‑wide committees, task forces, and teams. Report to the Department Head, Data Science Services. Position is based in North Carolina, eligible for flexible hours with a hybrid environment, and requires frequent onsite work.

Minimum Education and Experience- ALA‑accredited MLS, MIS, or other relevant advanced degree
Required Qualifications
- Proficiency with tabular data concepts, including generation, preparation, analysis, and experience with spreadsheets and tabular tools such as SPSS, SAS, JMP, Google Sheets, or STATA.
- Proficiency with data visualization concepts, including conceptualizing, designing, and building effective visualizations for research presentations and publications.
- Ability to teach workshops or instruction on preparing and visualizing data, including sessions based in Google Sheets.
- Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new technical skills and tools; evidence of ongoing, self‑directed learning.
- Interest in providing services that support students, faculty, and staff in developing data skills.
- Ability to serve and collaborate with a large user community across diverse disciplines.
- Ability to foster an environment of belonging and well‑being.
- Ability to communicate clearly and knowledgeably through various media and represent the Libraries to university and external audiences.
