Position: Extension Agent, FCS (Assistant, Associate, or Full Agent)

Responsibilities

The agent in this position will provide leadership for the development, implementation, evaluation, and marketing of an effective educational program in family and consumer sciences (FCS), including foods, nutrition, and health. The agent will align programs to meet the needs of the county population and support the mission of the organization.

Key duties include:

  • Implement programs through delivery methods such as workshops, classes, seminars, technical assistance, field trips, tours, and other interactive formats.
  • Plan and execute programs that utilize research‑based educational activities in nutrition, food safety, health and wellness, local foods and cooking, chronic disease reduction, and volunteer management.
  • Seek grants or other funding sources to support expanded or innovative programming.
  • Collaborate and network with other agencies, groups, and organizations with similar missions.
  • Manage and work closely with volunteers in the Cumberland County Extension Volunteer Association, promoting the volunteer program, recruiting new volunteers, evaluating services, and providing mentorship.
  • Adapt programming to incorporate a youth component and ensure inclusion of diverse audiences.
  • Attend training in food safety and food preservation, meeting the departmental demand for this expertise.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 overall, or 3.0 in family and consumer sciences or a related field. The GPA requirement will be waived for Program Associates with a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Or a Bachelor’s degree and completion of at least one‑half of a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, having at least one degree in family and consumer sciences or a related field.
  • Or a completed Master’s degree with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences or a related field.

Required Skills

  • Strong self‑direction, work ethic, and time management.
  • Energetic, innovative, and capable of managing multiple tasks with little supervision.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, marketing, and networking abilities.
  • Knowledge and experience in educational presentations, public relations, marketing, print media, leadership, and computer usage.
  • Ability to evaluate programs, document contacts, and measure impacts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree at the time of hiring, with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences, nutrition, or related sciences.
  • Plan to pursue a Master’s degree after hiring.
  • Grantsmanship skills and experience securing and managing outside funding for innovative programming.

Required License or Certification

Valid Driver’s License and reliable personal transportation required. Valid North Carolina driver’s license must be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained thereafter.

Compensation

Minimum salary:
Bachelor’s holder - $40,000;
Master’s holder - $45,000;
Doctorate holder - $50,000, commensurate with experience.
