UTS - Temporary Japanese Language Extension Instructor at NC State

The Japanese Language Extension Instructor will teach non-credit Japanese language courses of varying levels, from beginner to preparation for the JLPT N1 exam. Instructors will teach a minimum of one course per semester, for a total minimum of three courses per year. Each course lasts fifteen weeks, with one class per week, lasting 2 hours.

Courses may be conducted in both in‑person and online formats, and instructors may be assigned to either modality or a combination of both.

Instructors will design or tailor special courses in collaboration with the EECOM, and may have flexibility in weeks, class frequency and duration, as long as the total weekly hours do not exceed thirty.

Responsibilities
  • Teach Japanese language courses based on the Genki and Quartet series.
  • Prepare and deliver instructional materials, including lesson plans and assessments.
  • Utilize smart board technology and deliver online instruction using Zoom or Google Meet, including breakout rooms.
  • Accurately manage timesheet entries and related documentation.
  • Respond promptly to student and management inquiries via email.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Japanese, Linguistics, Education, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the Japanese language, capable of teaching beginner through advanced levels, including JLPT N1 preparation.
  • Prior teaching or instructional experience in Japanese language courses, particularly in non‑credit, community‑based, or academic settings.
  • Experience teaching with Genki and/or Quartet textbooks (preferred).
  • Experience with breakout rooms in online platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet (preferred).
Skills & Attributes
  • Strong organizational skills for preparation and delivery of instructional materials.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Drive, and Google Slides.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, Monday – Thursday, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm.
