Position: Extension Agent, FCS (Assistant, Associate, or Full Agent)

Position Overview

NC State Extension extends research-based knowledge to all North Carolinians, helping them transform science into everyday solutions. This position may be hired at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Agent level if the selected candidate meets the required qualifications. The agent works in Cumberland County offices and enjoys the benefits of employment at NC State University.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Plan, market, conduct, and evaluate educational programs in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) for Cumberland County.
  • Develop viable, proactive, research‑based programs in nutrition, food safety, health & wellness, local foods, cooking, chronic disease reduction, and volunteer management for both adult and youth audiences.
  • Collaborate with Extension agents in the region on common educational program initiatives, ensuring a youth component in all programming.
  • Lead the development, implementation, evaluation, and marketing of effective FCS educational programs, using workshops, classes, seminars, technical assistance, field trips, tours, and other methods.
  • Seek grants and other funding sources to support expanded or innovative programming.
  • Collaborate and network with other agencies, groups, and organizations with similar missions; demonstrate self‑motivation, energy, and the ability to work with diverse audiences and multiple tasks.
  • Manage volunteers within the Cumberland County Extension Volunteer Association—promote the program, recruit, evaluate, mentor, and implement improvements.
  • Attend training in food safety and food preservation, addressing strong demand for related information.
Qualifications
  • One of the following educational requirements:
    • Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 overall (or 3.0 in family and consumer sciences or a related field) on a 4.0 scale; GPA waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor’s degree.
    • Bachelor’s degree and completion of at least one‑half of a Master’s curriculum with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, including at least one degree in family and consumer sciences or a related field.
    • Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences, nutrition, or a related field.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license required within 60 days of hire and ongoing maintenance.
  • No physical requirement; no commercial driver’s license required.
Required Skills
  • Self‑directed with a strong work ethic, energetic, innovative, and excellent time management.
  • Organizational, interpersonal, marketing, and networking skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in educational presentations, public relations, marketing, print media, leadership, computer usage.
  • Ability to evaluate programs and document contacts and impacts.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree at the time of hiring or a plan to pursue it after hiring.
  • Grantsmanship skills and experience securing and managing outside funding for innovative programming.
