About the Department

Founded in 1947, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (PRTM) is dedicated to improving the health and well‑being of communities by promoting active lifestyles and fostering positive connections between people and nature. Through innovative teaching, collaborative research, and engagement with partners, the department offers three undergraduate degree programs, three graduate degree programs, and two online degree and certificate programs.

The department’s research and education focus includes Recreation and Park Management and Tourism and Event Management. Extension and Outreach programs help protect special places and enhance community and tourist health and well‑being.

Job Duties

The Department invites applications for a distinguished professor in youth development through recreation and sports. The appointment is a 9‑month term with approximately 45% research, 45% teaching, and 10% service. Candidates will lead research, outreach, and teaching related to youth development, and will serve as a leader in research, outreach, and teaching.

Responsibilities
  • Expand an existing distinguished record of research, teaching, and engagement.
  • Lead collaborative external research funding initiatives.
  • Instruct undergraduate and graduate courses, with a teaching load of two courses per semester.
  • Contribute to curricular development within PRTM and with campus collaborators.
  • Serve on and lead PRTM, CNR, and university committees.
  • Engage in professional and public service activities.
  • Sustain a robust network of community or industry stakeholders to disseminate research and teaching outputs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. in parks, recreation and tourism management, leisure studies, sport management or a closely related social science.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in parks, recreation and tourism management, sport management, or related field; candidates with related degrees encouraged if experienced in youth development.
  • Applicants at rank of Associate Professor considered only for appointment at rank of Full Professor under university guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Track record of collaborative research as participant and leader.
  • Skill in working effectively and collaboratively with faculty, administration, and external groups.
  • Extensive experience in teaching and advising undergraduates and graduates.
  • Demonstrated success in research scholarship, publications, and securing competitive grant funding.
  • Excellent communication skills: interpersonal, written, verbal, presentation and listening.
