Position Overview

The Department of Speech and Hearing Science in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, with expertise in the applicability of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and tools to speech-language pathology or audiology. We are searching broadly for individuals who do empirical research on the development or application of AI tools and techniques that have relevance for speech, language, or hearing sciences and disorders, and whose research program focuses on future developments, best practices and applications of AI within our disciplines.

The ideal candidate will work with the department to create a vision for the future of AI in our field, and describe a pathway leading toward this future. The ideal candidate will also help to prepare future generations of researchers and clinicians for careers in which AI will be heavily featured, expanding the expertise and scope of our fields.

Performance Objectives

• Develop and maintain active research program.
• Teach courses in basic speech-language or hearing sciences, as well as courses in more clinically applied areas associated with their area of expertise.
• Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research.
• Integrate exposure to, and experience with, AI tools in our undergraduate, professional, and PhD programs.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required: Applicants must have a PhD in Speech and Hearing Science, Communicative Disorders, AI, Computer Science, or a related field. The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals or an emerging publication record, and evidence of potential for extramural funding (e.g., National Institutes of Health, NSF). Willingness to work collaboratively with faculty and to mentor students representing varied perspectives and academic backgrounds is essential.

Department Information

The Department of Speech and Hearing Science consists of 22 full-time faculty across the tenure, clinical, and research tracks. The Department has four main academic programs: the BA in Speech and Hearing Science, MA in Speech-Language Pathology, AuD in Audiology, and the PhD.

Ohio State has announced an AI Fluency initiative that aims to integrate artificial intelligence into the undergraduate and graduate educational experience. The goal is to ensure that students have mastery not only of their major field of study, but also of the application of AI within their major field. Workshops and modules focused on AI will also be featured in courses in the General Education curriculum, equipping students with essential AI skills to interact with AI creatively and responsibly.
