Eaton’s Critical Power Solutions (CPS) team has an exciting and rewarding position of a Chief Power Electronics Systems Engineer to serve as a subject matter expert across multiple concurrent new product development projects in high‑power three‑phase UPS’s, AI load‑smoothing products and battery energy storage. In this role, you will develop system architectures, review power topologies and component selection, provide expert technical consulting to solve challenging problems.

This position reports directly to our Engineering Director for Critical Power Solutions and offers a hybrid work schedule in Raleigh, NC. Relocation assistance is available.

The expected annual salary range for this role is $146,000 - $214,000 a year. This position is also eligible for a variable incentive program.

Responsibilities
  • Work with cross‑functional business team to define requirements and architecture for new products including SiC three‑phase UPS’s from 500kW to 2.5MW, AI load‑smoothing products, datacenter of the future subsystems and Lithium Ion 1MW and larger energy storage systems.
  • Provide SME input to detailed designs of 480

    Vac three‑phase AC rectifier/inverter, 400

    Vdc‑1500

    Vdc DC‑DC converters and battery chargers including power train, gate drive, feedback control loop, voltage and current sense, EMI and protection circuit designs.
  • Work with global product development teams to solve problems related to performance, functionality, safety, reliability, quality and component availability.
  • Own technical leadership and collaborate with multi‑disciplinary and multi‑cultural globally distributed teams, provide technical direction and mentor younger engineers.
  • Lead the CPS business technology roadmaps, aligned to 5‑year strategic plans and business objectives.
  • Lead the engagements with Corporate Research Labs, Centers of Excellence, and University research institutions to align low‑TRL technologies into product development technology roadmaps.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years work experience in low and medium voltage power conversion and power systems engineering.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years work experience in related areas, such as Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, energy storages and grid connected converters, medium voltage motor drive technology, driver/converter topologies, high‑power electronics, electric machines and controls.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of work experience in modeling power converters and power systems using simulation tools.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PH.D. in Electrical Engineering from accredited institution.
  • Experience and knowledge of datacenter power distribution architecture, and how UPS's operate to keep datacenters powered at all times.
  • Experience working with multi‑kW lithium ion energy storage systems including battery management and products designed for outdoor or non‑climate controlled environments.
  • Experience with power distribution system design, analysis and protection.
  • Experience with circuit design, filtering, analog/digital converters, sensor interfaces, control circuitry and architectures.
Position Criteria
  • Understanding of how thermal management affects the overall performance of the system, appreciation for the trade‑offs necessary to achieve designs that meet performance requirements and cost objective solutions.
  • Experience with the design and analysis of magnetic components for power electronics circuits—such as high‑frequency inductors and transformers—and an extensive knowledge of the materials and construction techniques and how they affect their characteristics.
  • Experience with proven track record in new technology development with multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills (oral and written).
