Engineer I - Substation (Engineering Boot Camp 2026)

Qualus invites you to apply for the Engineer I – Substation role, part of our 2026 Engineering Boot Camp, a full‑time position paired with structured training to accelerate growth in the power industry.

As a Boot Camp Engineer, you’ll receive classroom instruction, site visits, hands‑on safety training, and guided FE exam preparation. Choose from four tracks – Protection & Controls, Power System Studies, Substation Engineering, or Relay Settings – to pursue the specialty that excites you.

• Coordinate with Substation Design Engineers, Relay Settings Engineers, and other teams to ensure design concurrence.
• Design substations using applicable codes and client standards, including general arrangement, equipment and electrical layout, elevation views, cable trenches, grounding studies, conduit drawings, lightning protection, AC/DC power systems, and bill of materials.
• Perform calculations such as AC/DC load, bus spans, and ampacity.
• Create equipment and material specifications for procurement and develop design scope and cost estimates.
• Work on project teams supporting all quality and project‑management goals, meeting project deadlines and processes.
• Maintain up‑to‑date technical skills related to substation design and protection & control schematics through on‑the‑job work and formal training.
• Apply and support safety consciousness and awareness on substation projects.
• Use CAD/drafting skills to develop drawings, assist in preparation of design packages, and prepare supporting documentation for procurement, construction, and operation/maintenance.
• Follow established design and CAD drafting standards, ensuring quality, accuracy, and completeness.
• Identify and communicate process‑improvement ideas through appropriate management channels.

• BS Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited school (Mechanical Engineering degrees accepted for some roles) with a focus on power systems.
• Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Micro Station.
• Educational experience directly related to working with medium‑to‑high‑voltage electricity (preferred).
• Strong independent work ethic, accuracy, and high attention to detail.
• Excellent communication skills, able to discuss technical recommendations with customers.
• Strong computer skills.
