Wastewater Sampling Technician (Part-time Temporary)

We are hiring a part-time temporary Wastewater Sampling Technician to help us maintain compliance with wastewater and pretreatment regulations. You will collect wastewater samples and record accurate field observations at municipal, industrial, and utility locations.

You are detail oriented, observant, and enjoy being on the go. You can work both on a team and independently. You can coordinate schedules, communicate well, and work safely in the field. You have an understanding of scientific principles and the ability to adhere to Standard Operating Procedures. You enjoy utilizing your problem solving and customer service skills. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to gain some experience in the environmental field.

Raleigh Water Industrial Pretreatment Program surveys businesses, issues permits, and inspects users who discharge industrial wastewater. We support and regulate local industry, and protect the Environment by protecting Raleigh’s wastewater collection system and treatment works. You will be collecting the data needed for surcharge billing, compliance judgments, and key policy decisions for Raleigh’s environmental stewardship initiatives.

• Conducts sampling of industrial users of the Publicly Owned Treatment Works, including cleaning, setup, and transport of portable autosamplers
• Conducts municipal sewer line wastewater sampling
• Reads flow meters to accurately determine industrial usage of the Publicly Owned Treatment Works
• Accurately enters industrial user data into a spreadsheet
• Prepares and maintains accurate sampling records via chain of custody and field report documentation and ensures that sampling bottles match these forms
• Performs Industrial Waste Survey visits to understand industrial processes, and to assess how these will potentially affect the waste stream entering the Publicly Owned Treatment Works

High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency and 1 to 3 years' experience in routine/minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical or related maintenance work

OR

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted

• Basic ability to use simple electronic devices or systems for communication and timekeeping is preferred

• Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

• Modern office practices and procedures including the use of standard office equipment and computer applications such as word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications

• Comprehend reference books and manuals

• Must be able to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, bending, climbing, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, and basic maintenance equipment
• Willingness to follow safety procedures and work around wastewater treatment processes
