Metrology Engineers apply measurement science, mathematics, physics, and engineering principles to develop and/or design and support measurement systems, processes, and procedures for calibration of measurement and test equipment. They use statistics to analyze calibration standards and processes, evaluate new calibration methods and procedures, recommend calibration standards, and monitor compliance with calibration laboratory and/or departmental processes.
- Instrument and system development: develop and/or design and support systems, processes, methods and procedures for calibrating metrology equipment.
- Calibration and maintenance: perform calibration, verification, and maintenance on metrology equipment to ensure ongoing accuracy and performance.
- Data analysis: analyze metrology data to assess calibration quality, identify trends, perform statistical analysis, and correlate results with performance metrics; develop uncertainty budgets.
- Quality assurance: develop and implement measurement techniques, procedures, and protocols for quality assurance and control, ensuring compliance with specifications and international standards like ISO 17025.
- Process improvement: collaborate with manufacturing, process, and quality engineers to troubleshoot measurement-related issues and implement solutions to improve accuracy and efficiency; research calibration requirements to recommend calibration standards.
- Validation and testing: create and execute validation plans and test setups for new equipment, processes, and prototypes.
- Training: train technicians and other personnel on proper use, maintenance, and repair of metrology systems.
- Associate's degree in a relevant field plus applicable certification or on-the-job training plus at least three years of experience in an applicable role, OR High school diploma plus applicable certification or on-the-job training plus at least five years of experience in an applicable role.
