Substation Physical Engineer
Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Substation Physical Engineer for our high‑voltage substation design team. The role involves applying NESC, NEC, and other applicable codes and standards, independently producing high‑voltage arrangements, plan and elevation views, grounding analysis, layouts, cable trough and conduit plans, AC and DC calculations for station service and battery sizing, equipment specifications, a bill of materials, and construction documents.
The engineer works with internal and external stakeholders to meet project milestones and expectations.
- Design all aspects of high‑voltage (4kV‑230kV) and EHV (above 230kV) substation projects, including:
- Development of
- General arrangements
- Plan and elevation views
- Grounding plans
- Cable trough/ conduit plans
- Specifications for major primary equipment (transformers, breakers, switches, etc.)
- Documentation for design calculations
- Bill of materials
- Construction documentation (sequence and RFP)
- Studies
- Grounding
- Lightning
- AC and DC calculations for station service and battery sizing
- Bus‑fault stress analysis
- Technical support
- Procurement
- Construction
- Active coordination
- Work seamlessly with the Physical Designer to develop drawings
- Coordinate with external and internal team members, including transmission line engineers, distribution line engineers, civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, and surveyors
- Other expectations
- Produce high‑quality work and support continuous improvement
- Enjoy fast‑paced, multiple‑project work
- Identify key client interests, communicate them to the team, and develop suitable approaches
- Act as a technical specialist for system protection and communication, offering consultation
- Remove impediments to engineering team success
- Advises management on maximizing ROI for the team
- Attend all client technical review meetings
- Development of
- Minimum of 4 years related experience in high‑voltage substation design – P&C
- Proficiency in CDEGS, WinIGS, or similar lightning and grounding study programs
- Proficiency assessing mechanical forces and thermal effects of high fault currents on rigid bus
- Good knowledge of industry and technology trends specific to substations
- Strong familiarity with NEC and National Electrical Safety Code
$90,000 – $120,000
