Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer – Food & Medical Device Packaging Machinery
Ossid LLC, Powered by Pro Mach, is a leader in the manufacture of automated packaging systems. We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to design custom and standard packaging machinery, oversee projects from concept to delivery, and provide product improvement support for existing designs.
Responsibilities- Lead packaging machine design projects from concept through final testing following Ossid’s Engineering Development Process and Stage Gate Process.
- Develop 3D CAD models, layouts, BOMs and detailed mechanical drawings for systems and assemblies.
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing, controls, electrical/controls, service teams, and product line managers to ensure design integrity, manufacturability, ease of maintenance and compliance with customer requirements.
- Apply knowledge of controls components (motors, sensors, actuators, pneumatics, HMIs, PLC interfaces) to influence mechanical design decisions.
- Oversee prototype build, debug, and final machine testing, incorporating feedback from manufacturing and testing teams into final designs.
- Ensure all design activities meet documentation standards, design reviews, and stage gate requirements.
- Mentor junior engineers, contribute to design standards, and recommend process improvements for quality and efficiency.
- Analyze and evaluate competitive products and participate in machining assembly testing to identify improvements needed to satisfy customer requirements.
- Process engineering change notices (ECNs) and maintain engineering databases and support records.
- 7+ years of mechanical design experience in packaging machinery, industrial equipment, or related capital equipment.
- Proven experience managing projects through formal development processes (Stage Gate, VA/VE, or similar).
- Strong proficiency in 3D CAD (Solid Works preferred) and PDM/Data Management systems.
- Solid understanding of machine controls components and their impact on mechanical design.
- Hands‑on experience with manufacturing processes, fabrication methods, and design for manufacturability (DFM).
- Excellent problem‑solving, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to lead cross‑functional teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Self‑motivated and adaptable to work independently or within a team.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; excellent computer skills (3D CAD and Microsoft Office).
- Positive attitude, strong organizational and detail‑oriented aptitude.
- Well‑disciplined engineering principles and standards.
- Simulation and material analysis experience.
- Desire to be hands‑on with machinery and equipment.
- GD&T experience.
- Experience with MRP/ERP systems and multi‑level BOM structures.
