Controls Design Engineer II
The Controls Design Engineer II provides electrical and controls design for product improvements and electrical/controls infrastructure across multiple manufactured product lines, while also coordinating site-wide drawings for assigned sites and projects. This role ensures that equipment, sites, and projects are designed, built, and applied in accordance with engineering documents, manufacturing requirements, and applicable standards such as UL and NEC. The position focuses on delivering safe, high-quality, and fully compliant products and solutions.
The Controls Design Engineer II works both independently and collaboratively, contributes to moderately complex to complex projects, and may supervise and guide lower-level Controls Designers and Controls Design Engineers.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop electrical and controls systems for product improvements and electrical/controls infrastructure across multiple manufactured product lines.
- Coordinate and maintain site-wide electrical and controls drawings for assigned sites and projects to ensure consistency and accuracy.
- Ensure all designs and applications conform to engineering documents, manufacturing standards, and applicable codes such as UL, NEC, and NFPA 79.
- Create, review, and update electrical schematics and control drawings using 2-D AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent software.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, construction specifications, single-line diagrams, product manuals, sequences of operations, and work instructions.
- Incorporate markups and redlines into electrical and control drawings to reflect design changes and field feedback.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including production and engineering, to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and meet project requirements.
- Interface with production while builds are in progress to support on-time delivery and ensure design intent, quality, and safety are maintained.
- Apply knowledge of UL, NEC, and NFPA 79 standards to ensure compliance in all electrical and control system designs.
- Contribute to moderately complex to complex projects, managing multiple assignments and owning 4–5 projects at any given time.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance design quality, safety, and efficiency.
- Provide guidance and informal supervision to lower-level Controls Designers and Controls Design Engineers as needed.
- Occasionally inspect products in progress on the manufacturing floor to verify conformance to design and standards.
- Occasionally assist in moving materials and equipment of approximately 40 pounds in support of design and inspection activities.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders through clear verbal and written updates, documentation, and technical explanations.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in engineering required, with a preference for electrical engineering.
- At least 3 years of related experience in electrical or controls design.
- Proficiency with 2-D Auto Desk AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent electrical schematic design software.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, construction specifications, single-line diagrams, product manuals, sequences of operations, control drawings, work instructions, written directions, and markups to electrical/control drawings.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to solve moderately complex to complex design and application problems.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and priorities.
- Detail-oriented approach with a high level of accuracy in drawings and documentation.
- Working knowledge of UL, NEC, and NFPA 79 standards and their application to electrical and control system design.
- Ability to occasionally inspect products in-progress in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to occasionally assist in moving materials and equipment of approximately 40 pounds.
