Applied Research Associates, Inc. offers an exciting role to support our growing business in modeling and simulation of physical phenomena within a 3D geometric modeling environment linked to a geographic information system (GIS). We use traditional physical modeling approaches and machine learning to solve critical national security problems, developing engineering and physics‑based methodologies, analytical algorithms, and software tools.

Our work focuses on modeling a diverse range of phenomena including air blast, ground shock, and structural response. Models span from fast physics‑based models to high fidelity CFD, molecular dynamics, and finite element approaches. You will develop or integrate models, performing verification & validation to ensure realistic results. The nature of work varies month to month, requiring continuous learning and growth.

Work location:

Raleigh, NC office. Requires presence 3 days a week.

• Bachelor of Science in Science or Engineering with 2‑4 years of experience.
• Strong interest and ability to develop modeling and simulation software in high‑level languages such as C++, Python, or Java.
• Desire to work in a dynamic team environment.

• Eligible to apply for and hold a U.S. security clearance. Selected applicants will undergo a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements at the time of employment.

• Master of Science in Science or Engineering with 0‑2 years of relevant work experience.
• Expertise in DoD modeling and simulation technology, structural dynamics, nuclear weapon effects, ground shock environments, geotechnical characterization, and/or probabilistic analysis.
• Familiarity with software design patterns, modern C++, and agile software development practices.
• Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written mediums with technical and non‑technical audiences.
