Job Title:
Technical Project Engineer – Substation Projects (Contract-to-Hire)
Travel: Up to 20% (site, office, and factory visits; quarterly Raleigh visit)
Schedule: 40 hours/week
OverviewWe are seeking a driven and highly organized Technical Project Engineer to act as the central coordinator across high-voltage substation projects. This is a high-level engineering coordination role
—not a hands-on designer—focused on keeping multidisciplinary teams aligned, ensuring deliverables are met, and driving projects forward from design through execution. You will serve as the technical point of contact between engineering teams, project management, and field installation crews, ensuring clear communication, accountability, and momentum toward project milestones.
This role is ideal for an engineer with substation design experience who has transitioned into a more project-focused, client-facing position and thrives in fast-paced, evolving environments.
Key Responsibilities- Act as the technical project coordinator across 2–3 concurrent substation projects, ensuring alignment on scope, schedule, and deliverables
- Drive accountability across engineering teams—track progress, follow up on action items, and remove roadblocks
- Serve as the primary technical liaison between engineering, construction/installation teams, and internal stakeholders
- Translate complex technical concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences, including field personnel
- Maintain structured and shareable document control systems (drawings, deliverables, project files)
- Support project planning, risk identification, and proactive issue resolution to keep projects on track
- Participate in client-facing interactions, providing updates and ensuring expectations are managed
- Coordinate design reviews, track comments, and ensure timely incorporation into deliverables
- Promote a strong team culture focused on execution, accountability, and end-goal delivery
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or related field)
- 3–5+ years of experience in substation engineering or high-voltage projects
- Prior exposure to substation design (hands-on background strongly preferred)
- Experience in a project engineering, coordination, or project management-style role
- Strong understanding of engineering deliverables and project life cycles
- Strong communicator – able to clearly explain technical concepts to engineers, field teams, and non-technical stakeholders
- Highly organized – creates and maintains structured documentation systems that teams can easily follow
- Assertive and proactive – comfortable driving teams, following up, and "grabbing the reins" to keep projects moving
- Adaptable mindset – thrives in environments that may not always be perfectly structured
- Positive attitude – maintains energy and focus in high-pressure project environments
- Work on a growing portfolio of high-voltage substation projects as part of a newly developing team
- Exposure to full project lifecycle: engineering, procurement, and construction coordination
- Opportunity to transition into a long-term role, with relocation support available for candidates interested in moving to Raleigh, NC
