Position Overview
HDR is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join our established Power program in North Carolina. This role may be based in any of the following offices:
Charlotte, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Asheville, Wilmington. You will serve as a technical lead on the analysis, design, and construction of modifications for large‑scale dams and critical power infrastructure across the region. You will also have the opportunity to act as Project Manager for mid‑size initiatives and support marketing efforts for both internal and external clients.
- Drive project workflows and planning.
- Conduct geotechnical field investigations and laboratory testing programs.
- Prepare geotechnical analyses, design calculations and reports.
- Review and evaluate dam safety instrumentation data.
- Perform finite element modeling of dams.
- Prepare design drawings and construction specifications.
- Participate in dam safety inspections.
- Support marketing efforts for internal and external clients.
- Perform additional tasks as required to support project goals and HDR business activities.
- Serve as Project Manager for mid‑size initiatives when required.
This position is subject to a pre‑employment drug test. Ability to perform field work and overnight travel is required; local candidates are preferred.
Preferred Qualifications- Bachelor's or M.S. degree in Geotechnical or Geological Engineering.
- PE license in NC.
- 5 years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Micro Station, or GIS applications.
- Experience with industry‑standard geotechnical and geological engineering software.
- Planning, performing, and documenting subsurface explorations.
- Reviewing and interpreting field and laboratory testing results.
- Reading, reviewing, and interpreting geotechnical instrumentation.
- Experience with dam safety inspections and dam engineering.
- Ability to work independently on smaller projects and collaborate on larger projects with a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to handle multiple simultaneous tasks effectively.
- Receptive to technical mentoring, passion for meeting complex challenges.
- Strong problem‑solving and reasoning skills.
- Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.
- Capability to perform field work and overnight travel.
- Bachelor's degree.
- Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position (e.g., PE or P.Eng).
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications, Micro Station or other appropriate software.
- Experience with Geo Studio/Ensoft for slope stability, settlement, seepage and deep foundation response.
- Experience with Bentley suite of geotechnical data management and visualization software (gINT/Open Ground/Leap Frog).
