Automation Engineer (Emerson DeltaV – Life Sciences)
This Automation Engineer role focuses on designing, configuring, and implementing advanced Emerson DeltaV automation solutions for biopharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing environments. You will work in a dynamic system integration setting, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and life sciences clients to translate complex process requirements into robust DeltaV control strategies, batch processes, and compliant automation systems that support efficient, reliable, and regulated production.
Responsibilities- Design, develop, configure, and implement Emerson DeltaV control systems in alignment with customer specifications, internal standards, and industry best practices.
- Design and program DeltaV batch processes in accordance with ISA-88 standards to support life sciences manufacturing operations.
- Collaborate directly with clients in the life sciences industry to gather requirements, clarify process needs, and develop customized automation solutions.
- Engineer system architectures, instrument specifications, and control strategies to optimize manufacturing efficiency, reliability, and scalability.
- Configure DeltaV controllers, applications, HMI graphics, and historian solutions while ensuring compliance with cGMP and 21 CFR Part 11 regulations.
- Convert customer requirements and specifications into DeltaV code, including batch logic, graphics, and related configuration, and perform thorough testing of the implemented code.
- Provide on-site startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting support for DeltaV systems deployed into production environments.
- Ensure compliance with system and software development life cycle methodologies, including preparation and maintenance of validation and related documentation.
- Work closely with electrical engineers, process engineers, validation engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders to deliver automation projects on time and within budget.
- Support integration of DeltaV systems with field instruments, controllers, and industrial networks, ensuring robust communication and system performance.
- Perform troubleshooting and issue resolution for automation systems, including DeltaV batch processes and related hardware and software components.
- Contribute to project-based work by supporting design reviews, testing activities, documentation development, and continuous improvement initiatives within the automation environment.
- Engineering degree in electrical engineering or chemical engineering.
- 5–7 years of experience in the automation field, including a minimum of 2 years of hands-on Emerson DeltaV experience.
- Proficiency in Emerson DeltaV control systems, including configuration, programming, and implementation.
- Experience with DeltaV batch configuration and ISA-88 batch processing standards.
- Strong background in automation and process control strategies, including loop tuning and system integration.
- Experience with cGMP environments and familiarity with 21 CFR Part 11 regulatory requirements.
- Ability to develop and configure DeltaV controllers, HMI graphics, historian solutions, and related applications.
- Demonstrated troubleshooting skills for automation systems, including DeltaV and related hardware and software.
- Experience with automation protocols such as HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, and OPC.
- Understanding of industrial networking for communication between controllers, servers, and HMIs.
- Working experience in the life sciences industry (biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or medical devices) is preferred, but strong Emerson DeltaV experience from other industries is also acceptable.
- Experience with PLC programming and broader automation platforms such as Rockwell.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and manage tasks within project timelines and budgets.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience supporting biopharmaceutical or medical device manufacturing environments.
- Hands-on experience with DeltaV batch solutions, including design, configuration, testing, and commissioning.
- Exposure to mechanical systems in an automation context.
- Strong documentation skills, particularly in regulated pharma and biotech environments with extensive validation and compliance requirements.
- Ability to interpret and translate customer requirements and specifications into detailed automation designs and code.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with clients and internal project teams.
