Job DescriptionThe Senior TSMO Engineer supports the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) programs that improve transportation system safety, reliability, mobility, and efficiency. The position works collaboratively with transportation agencies, local governments, operations personnel, and stakeholders to advance traffic safety initiatives, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), traffic operations, work zone management, traffic incident management, and performance-based decision making.
The TSMO Engineer provides technical leadership and engineering support for transportation operations programs, develops operational improvement strategies, oversees data-driven performance monitoring efforts, and assists with identifying, prioritizing, and delivering operational enhancements throughout the transportation network.
Responsibilities
- Lead or support regional and corridor-level TSMO initiatives focused on safety, mobility, reliability, and operational efficiency.
- Identify, evaluate, and prioritize transportation operational improvement projects and strategies.
- Develop and monitor transportation performance measures and key performance indicators to support data-driven decision making.
- Analyze traffic operations, crash trends, system reliability, and mobility performance to identify improvement opportunities.
- Support development and implementation of traffic safety improvement programs and operational strategies.
- Manage or support Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) planning, deployment, operations, and maintenance activities.
- Support traffic signal operations, timing, coordination, and safety improvement initiatives.
- Develop strategies to improve work zone safety and mobility through planning, operational analysis, and stakeholder coordination.
- Support traffic incident management (TIM) programs, training initiatives, and interagency coordination efforts.
- Coordinate with state DOTs, local agencies, law enforcement, emergency management personnel, and private-sector partners.
- Develop operational policies, procedures, guidance documents, and training materials.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, funding recommendations, and project justifications.
- Develop dashboards, visualizations, and reports that communicate operational performance and project outcomes.
- Evaluate emerging transportation technologies, connected vehicle applications, and innovative operational strategies.
- Support program budgeting, project development, funding applications, and project implementation activities.
- Participate in research initiatives and implement innovative transportation solutions.
The TSMO Engineer will:
- Apply engineering principles to transportation operations, traffic safety, ITS, and mobility improvement projects.
- Conduct operational assessments and develop recommendations based on performance data and engineering analysis.
- Support project identification, planning, prioritization, implementation, and performance evaluation.
- Lead or support multidisciplinary teams addressing transportation safety and operational challenges.
- Perform technical analysis related to traffic operations, incident management, work zones, ITS deployments, and system performance.
- Develop innovative and cost-effective solutions to improve transportation system performance.
- Support organizational goals through strategic planning and continuous improvement initiatives.
Minimum:
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related engineering field.
- Ten (10) years of experience in transportation operations, traffic engineering, TSMO, ITS, traffic safety, or related transportation disciplines or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
