Battery Systems Validation Engineering Technician

Eaton's ES AMER ESS division is currently seeking a Battery Systems Validation Engineering Technician. This role is based out of Raleigh, NC.

The Battery Systems Validation Engineering Technician II provides technical support for engineering teams developing and validating lithium-ion and lead-acid battery systems used with 3-phase UPS products. The role supports testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, and failure analysis while following Eaton safety requirements and approved energized-work procedures.

The expected annual salary range for this role is $56000 - $83000 a year. Please note the salary information shown above is a general guideline only. Salaries are based upon candidate skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

What You'll Do:

• Assemble, inspect, configure, and commission UPS battery cabinets, modules, busbars, fuses, breakers, communication harnesses, and monitoring components

• Execute charge/discharge, runtime, functional, thermal, communications, balancing, and commissioning tests

• Configure Battery Management Systems (BMS) and troubleshoot Modbus, CANBus, Ethernet, and RS-485 communications

• Use electrical test equipment and data-acquisition systems to record results and prepare test reports

• Troubleshoot battery modules, BMS components, controls, sensors, and UPS integration using schematics and wiring diagrams

• Perform authorized work on energized battery systems using required PPE, insulated tools, safe-work boundaries, and hazard controls; maintain an organized and safe test lab

Qualifications:

Required (Basic)

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience with electrical power systems, batteries, UPS systems, industrial controls, or a related engineering/technical role.
  • Working knowledge of UPS battery fundamentals, including lead-acid and lithium-ion technologies, battery strings and cabinets, charging/discharging, basic BMS operation, and high-energy DC hazards.
  • Willing and able to work on or near energized electrical hazards using required arc-flash PPE, electrical gloves, insulated tools, barricades, and authorized safe-work procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Live-work experience performing non-routine work on or near energized electrical conductors or circuit parts that have not been placed in an electrically safe work condition because de-energizing is infeasible due to equipment design or operational limitations.
  • Experience with lithium-ion and lead-acid battery systems, UPS systems, energy storage, or power-conversion equipment.
  • Knowledge of Battery Management Systems (BMS), battery monitoring, alarms, firmware, and system configuration.
  • Experience with Modbus RTU/TCP, CANBus, Ethernet, or RS-485 communications.
  • Experience performing battery charge/discharge, runtime, functional, thermal, fault-injection, or commissioning tests.
  • Proficiency with digital multimeters, power analyzers, current probes, load banks, battery analyzers, and data-acquisition systems.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and mechanical assembly drawings.
  • NFPA 70E training and qualification as an electrical worker.
  • Experience supporting engineering validation, UL/IEC product certification testing, or customer demonstrations.
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills and experience supporting root-cause investigations and verification testing.
  • Experience with battery cabinet assembly, pre-energization inspection, torque verification, and mechanical integration with UPS equipment.
  • Safety-focused decision making and attention to detail when working around high-energy DC systems.
