Description of Work

These positions have been established as hybrid teleworking with a minimum starting salary of $48,000. Revenue Officers work at the Raleigh Service Center a minimum of two days per week. The primary purpose is to answer technical tax law questions, resolve issues, and increase compliance by ensuring the appropriate amount of tax is reported and paid by each taxpayer. This is accomplished by providing professional customer service, engaging in timely enforcement action, communicating with taxpayers and agency personnel, and handling highly emotional situations with professionalism.

The role requires strong prioritization, independent work, and effective communication.

Responsibilities
  • Assist taxpayers and representatives to determine tax liabilities and educate the public on state tax matters while promoting compliance.
  • Adjust accounts based on research or documents provided by taxpayers.
  • Communicate via telephone (inbound/outbound) to assist and resolve routine matters and special projects related to tax liabilities.
  • Utilize legal remedies to collect liabilities or secure returns.
  • Use professional judgment to decide when to initiate civil action and determine appropriate actions to resolve cases.
  • Work independently to examine, research, verify, and evaluate financial statements, returns, and other data.
  • Determine acceptable repayment terms through installment agreements and other methods.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Management Preferences
  • Basic knowledge of business administration principles related to tax reporting and calculation.
  • Basic skills using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Valid driver’s license required for taxpayer visits.
Recruitment Range

$48,000 – $79,504

Minimum Education And Experience

A bachelor’s degree in Business, Public Administration, Economics, Accounting, or a related field from an accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Relevant concentrations include Business Administration, Economics, Accounting, Tax Law, Public Administration, Finance, and others.
