UNC REX is seeking an experienced Surgical Technologist II to join our fast-paced, high-volume Labor & Delivery team. In this role, you'll support both life‑saving surgical procedures and critical care across the unit while working alongside a highly skilled, collaborative team.
PositionSummary
The Surgical Technologist II works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This role ensures the operating room environment is safe, equipment functions properly, and procedures are performed under conditions that maximize patient safety.
The Surgical Technologist II demonstrates advanced expertise in sterile and aseptic technique and applies in-depth knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and surgical technologies. This position performs surgical scrub duties across multiple services and serves as a resource in at least one service line, with a focus on Labor and Delivery.
About Our Labor & Delivery UnitThe UNC REX Labor & Delivery OR provides comprehensive care throughout labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery, including high-risk antepartum and postpartum patients. Our state‑of‑the‑art unit includes:
- 3-bay OB Emergency Department (OBED)
- 20 labor rooms
- 3 Operating Rooms (ORs)
- 3 Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) bays
Our team works closely with OB Hospitalists, private practice OB/GYNs, Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs), Nursing Assistants, and Surgical Technologists to deliver exceptional maternal and newborn care.
What You’ll Do Primary Responsibilities - Surgical Support- Serve as lead surgical technologist for scheduled and emergency Cesarean sections and obstetric surgeries
- Provide first assist support to surgeons during Cesarean deliveries
- Prepare, manage, and maintain surgical instruments and equipment
- Maintain strict sterile technique and adhere to infection prevention standards
- Collaborate with physicians and nursing staff to ensure efficient OR workflow
- Perform rapid room turnovers, including cleaning, stocking, and preparation
- Assist with setup and turnover for vaginal deliveries
- Support patient intake and transport during high-volume periods
- Assist in the OB PACU with patient transfers and equipment checks
- Support patient flow and emergency response in the OB Emergency Department
- Maintain a clean and safe environment by managing linens, waste, and equipment sanitation
- Advanced surgical technologist skills with experience across multiple services
- Strong teamwork, communication, and critical‑thinking abilities
- Ability to remain calm and act decisively in emergency situations
- Commitment to patient‑ and family‑centered care
- Willingness to serve as a resource within the Labor & Delivery service line
