Position OverviewThe Lab & Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Manager is responsible for ensuring daily operational efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance within a laboratory environment. This role oversees laboratory operations, equipment, and inventory while serving as the primary Biosafety Officer. The position promotes a proactive, safety-first culture by developing policies, conducting audits, and delivering training to ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
LaboratoryOperations & Management
- Workflow Optimization: Manage day-to-day laboratory operations, including logistics, equipment scheduling, and maintenance to support productivity and efficiency
- Inventory Management: Oversee purchasing, receiving, storage, and inventory tracking of chemicals, reagents, and laboratory supplies
- Equipment Maintenance: Ensure proper operation, calibration, and repair of laboratory instrumentation, including fume hoods and biosafety cabinets
- Chemical Hygiene & Safety: Serve as the designated Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) and maintain the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP)
- Biological & Hazardous Safety: Manage hazardous waste programs in accordance with RCRA, including labeling, storage, and disposal; oversee biological waste and ensure compliance with BSL-2 requirements
- Regulatory Inspections: Conduct routine laboratory safety audits, risk assessments, and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs); serve as the primary contact for regulatory agencies
- Documentation: Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS), training records, permits, and compliance documentation in an audit-ready state
- Safety Training: Develop and deliver safety training for new employees and annual refresher courses, including Hazard Communication, PPE use, and emergency response
- Culture Promotion: Foster a proactive safety culture through hands-on guidance, clear expectations, and accountability
- Incident Management: Lead investigations of incidents, injuries, and near-misses using root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions
- Emergency Planning: Lead site emergency response efforts and maintain the Emergency Action Plan (e.g., spills, fire, evacuation)
- Safety Equipment: Inspect, test, and maintain emergency safety equipment, including eyewash stations, safety showers, and fire extinguishers
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, or a related scientific discipline
- 3–7 years of experience in a laboratory environment
- At least 2–3 years in an EH&S, biosafety, or safety-focused role
- Expert knowledge of OSHA Laboratory Standards (29 CFR ), EPA, and DOT regulations
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic laboratory setting
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer (CCHO)
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
