Program SummaryThe Prime Information Service Division Internship program provides opportunities for collegiate students, recent graduates and workforce re‑entry candidates to explore various careers in Information Technology within the UNC Healthcare System. Candidates will gain hands‑on experience working with motivated and enthusiastic Healthcare System IT professionals, expanding their knowledge base, building resumes, and gaining relevant course‑related and career experience. Interns will work on tasks and projects determined by the team or department, shadow senior team members and receive hands‑on assignments.

- Assist with a variety of functions to support the Clinical Engineering department in supporting medical devices and their associated IT systems across the Healthcare system.
- Learn about new clinical systems, create documentation, compile data for equipment replacement planning, assist with implementing new technology, assess and address cybersecurity risks in medical devices, and develop departmental processes.
- Assist with device integration with IT systems and manage the full lifecycle of medical devices.
- Provide support under close supervision of a Clinical Engineering technician; opportunities for autonomy will be provided.
- Assist with functions to support the IT security department in assessing and reporting risk for systems deployed throughout hospitals and data centers.
- Learn about new systems, create documentation, compile data, produce reports, and support team projects using security tools for risk assessments.
- Work under close supervision of an IT security analyst; opportunities for autonomy will be provided.
- Attend regular meetings for the data science team and EADS.
- Assist with expanding and streamlining processes for the AI & Automation Advisory work group.
- Demonstrate intermediate skills with R or Python and common packages (dplyr, data.table, ggplot2, tidyr, Num Py, Sci Py, Scikit‑Learn, PyTorch).
- Work with the Data Science manager to ensure the team’s assets meet Architectural/Visualization Standards.
- Research and synthesize knowledge from internal and external sources to inform strategic planning.
- Help explore new tools to improve medical notes’ natural‑language processing.
- Provide support to end users by troubleshooting basic hardware and software issues and responding to user inquiries.
- Assist in managing desktop peripheral inventory and support asset‑management processes.
- Participate in evaluating IT products for compatibility, usability, and operational flexibility; help document and design integration options.
- Assist with hardware and software installation, imaging, deployment, and basic troubleshooting.
- Develop hands‑on IT support skills under supervision, progressively taking on more responsibility.
- Provide connectivity between locations, data centers, hosted and cloud‑based applications, and the internet.
- Assist the network team with day‑to‑day tasks such as router/switch installation, patching network drops, documentation, IDF cleanup, UPS replacement, and other necessary tasks.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Assist with functions to advance the ISD Computer Operations Technical Support UPS initiative across UNC Health facilities.
