About Us

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is charged with implementing the state's public school laws for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public schools at the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education.

Description of Work
  • This is an anticipated vacancy. This position is expected to be available on August 3, 2026.
  • This position is Exempt Policy making and is EXEMPT from certain provisions of the State Human Resources Act (GS 126).

The Director of Technology Services position serves as the Technology Officer for the Department of Public Instruction and leads IT operations, and support within the Agency. In collaboration with other directors in the Division of Technology Services and Digital Learning, this position leads the design, acquisition, management, and implementation of enterprise technology infrastructure. This role is charged with delivering a high-quality customer experience, standardized, efficient, and effective processes, security, and transparency throughout the Office.

The CTO is also responsible for establishing technical standards, processes, and procedures for Technology Operations and communicating them to relevant stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities
  • Support and implement the vision and mission of the Office, the Chief Information Officer, the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the State Board of Education.
  • Manage the IT operations, user support services, and application development sections.
  • Establish technical standards, processes, and procedures for IT operations, application development, and user support.
  • Coordinate with the Agency Operations and Facilities divisions to align and support agency operational initiatives, shared spaces, and building infrastructure.
  • Review IT purchases for the agency to ensure technical compatibility, accessibility, and alignment to the business need.
  • Partner with Divisions and Offices to understand and drive technology/information requirements through internal and external service providers to achieve the required technology and information capabilities.
  • Develop solutions to modernize and introduce innovative practices for agency operations and business processes.
  • Monitor the work of employees to ensure that projects are completed promptly.
  • Manage timelines, resources, and personnel (internal staff and contractors), and directs implementation efforts to completion.

Office of Technology Services:

The Office of Technology Services is responsible for leading IT operations for the Department and driving systemic change through the use of new technologies and innovative processes. The Office provides high quality customer service, strategic planning, and guidance on technology systems and related initiatives. The supports new IT initiatives and works in coordination with DPI business units while adhering to supporting standards and procedures developed by the agency and the Department of Information Technology (DlT) related to system development, procurement, and oversight.

The coordination extends to DPI internal customers as well as Public School Units (PSUs) that use these services.
