Sign Language Interpreter

Join our team as a Sign Language Interpreter and play a vital role in ensuring equitable access for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf Blind students, faculty, staff, and visitors across our University community.

In this role, you will provide high-quality sign language interpreting services in accordance with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Section 504, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008. Your expertise will directly support equal access to academic programs, campus services, and university events.

What You’ll Do Interpreting Services (80%)
  • Provide clear, accurate, and effective interpreting/transliterating services (receptive and expressive) for Deaf students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Fulfill both scheduled and substitute interpreting assignments across academic and campus settings.
  • Prepare thoroughly for assignments by reviewing course materials and related content in advance.
  • Research specialized vocabulary to ensure high-quality classroom and professional interpreting.
  • Maintain and strengthen professional interpreting skills through ongoing learning and development.
Coordination & Support (20%)
  • Partner with the D/HH/DB Services Coordinator to:
    • Schedule temporary staff and agency interpreters.
    • Coordinate and troubleshoot CART services, microphones, and other access technologies.
    • Support the mentorship and internship program, including training coordination, mentor/mentee matching, and debriefing.
  • Provide information and referrals to the Disability Resource Office (DRO) for students seeking accommodations and services.
  • Contribute to team and departmental initiatives as needed.

  • Knowledge of - or willingness to stay current with - ADA regulations, case law, and best practices in the disability field.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills.

  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.
Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
Other

Required Qualifications
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Completion of a Sign Language Interpreter Bachelor's degree program, or equivalent experience, preferably in a college environment.
  • Full license from the North Carolina Interpreters and Transl iterators Licensing Board (NCITLB).
  • National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) Certification required.
  • Working knowledge regarding the federal non-discriminatory mandates of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and its amendments.
  • Must have full understanding of and operate in accordance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Suite.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to provide mentoring to novice interpreters.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of specialized equipment used to communicate with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
