Position Overview
The Temporary ASL Interpreter Pool is intended for qualified applicants to be called upon for appointments on an as-needed basis of limited duration. By applying to this pooled position, applicants are not applying for a specific position. Instead, applicants are submitting an application to be considered for temporary, on-call, and some regularly anticipated needs that may arise to serve our students, staff, faculty, and visitors in both the classroom and at events.
Responsibilities- Provide sign language accommodations for all activities (academic as well as non-academic) on NC State campus.
- Prepare for interpreting assignments by learning new terminology and course material, as needed.
- Provide interpreting services for trainings, workshops, community awareness activities, and other community services as required or assigned.
- Mentor interns from local and regional Interpreter Training programs.
- Attend staff meetings and assist in preparing needed reports for their specific area.
- Perform related duties as required or assigned.
- Foster and maintain interpreting competence through ongoing development of knowledge and skills.
- Collaborate with colleagues to foster the delivery of effective services.
- Stay abreast of evolving language use and trends in the profession of interpreting as well as in the American Deaf community.
- Facilitate communication, both receptively and expressively, between members of the post-secondary community who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf Blind and hearing members.
- Adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct (CPC).
- Assess individual situations to determine the linguistic and cultural needs of each student who is Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Deaf Blind, related to language preferences.
- Attend non-revenue generating sporting events as required.
- Associate’s degree with demonstrated experience and knowledge of Deaf culture within the post-secondary educational environment.
- Provisional license from NCITLB (North Carolina Interpreter and Transl iterator License Board) or pending EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) test results to obtain provisional licensure.
- Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or BEI (Board for Evaluation of Interpreters) Certification.
- Full license from NCITLB (North Carolina Interpreter and Transl iterator License).
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited Interpreter Training Program.
