Overview

Fred Smith Company is currently searching for an experienced Transportation Manager
. With over 90 years of proven success, FSC is an established, and growing, heavy highway, site construction contractor and asphalt manufacturer with approximately 1,300 employees based in Raleigh, North Carolina and operating as far East as Kitty Hawk and as far West as Winston-Salem.

Responsibilities

The Transportation Manager is responsible for the efficient operations and effective coordination of all tractor trailer, dump, flat and water trucks. The successful candidate will have at least three years of experience in supervising trucking operations, and will have thorough knowledge of trucking, motor carrier safety regulations, commercial vehicle licensing, traffic laws, etc.

Job Duties
  • Coordinate and assist with scheduling the dispatch of materials, labor and equipment to achieve the optimum use of company resources.
  • Supervise and direct assigned personnel in their activities of operation of trucks, delivery of materials, dispatching vehicles, marketing services of the department and maintenance of assigned vehicles.
  • Supervise and direct assigned subcontractors in their activities to assure sound procedures and methods, quality control and those specifications comply with those expected by the company and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure departmental vehicles comply with preventative maintenance program.
  • Monitor and/or coordinate the scheduling, ordering and delivery of materials and parts used by transportation department personnel.
  • Participate in the evaluation of new fleet needs, evaluating available vehicles. Present recommendations, talk with vendors and get the best possible price when purchasing vehicles for the company.
  • Forecast all anticipated major repairs needed by transportation department and advise the Fleet Director - resource management of this forecast.
  • Study and be knowledgeable of all local ordinances and laws concerning EPA regulations, oil spill plan and other hazardous procedures to assure compliance of all haulers; arrange for all necessary permits and assistance as needed.
  • Keep current on all Department of Transportation, FMCSA and company’s compliance to same.
  • Be familiar with each project’s delivery and move needs and conduct regular field visits to see that these needs are met.
  • Direct the maintenance and cleanup of facility, yards and vehicles at all times.
  • Ensure supervisory personnel and clerical support are thoroughly familiar with procedures regarding the flow of paperwork; verify daily reports, purchase orders, personnel forms, etc., and assure all information reaches the proper department in a uniform, consistent and timely manner.
  • Assist and direct assigned personnel in the following areas: using vehicles in a safe and proper manner, improving job performance, controlling cost and quality of work, increasing productivity, improving communications. This also includes selecting, training and developing personnel and their adherence to company policies and procedures.
  • Conduct a continuous evaluation of material yields, plants and schedules, salaries, promotions and job assignments, equipment performance and needs, on-the-job training, job safety, quality control, security and crime prevention procedures.
  • Cooperate with the human resources and risk management departments, being knowledgeable as to all aspects of safety, OSHA and equal employment and affirmative action. Personally comply with these requirements and insist upon compliance among all assigned personnel.
  • Participate in the periodic evaluations of all assigned personnel, discussing their contributions to the company, their development and possible pay adjustments.
  • Confer regularly with other operation and project managers as to their needs regarding department field support and outside sales of services.
  • Confer regularly with the Fleet Director on progress and problems. Requesting advice and counsel as needed, carry out additional duties as assigned by executive officers.
Requirements
  • 3-5 years experience in leading transportation operations in the heavy civil industry
