Director of Sports Services

The Director of Sport Services manages the day-to-day operations of the Sport Services Department and oversees programs that support AKC clubs, breeders, exhibitors, junior handlers, and the broader dog sport community. The position is responsible for administering specialized programs including the Foundation Stock Service® recognition of new breeds, Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL), Breeder of Merit, Registered Kennel Names, veterinary outreach initiatives, junior programs, and breed standard administration.

Coordinates the scheduling and administration of the AKC Booth, assists Parent Clubs with requests for Breed Standard revisions. This role provides leadership to department staff, serves as a resource to clubs and delegates, and works collaboratively across AKC departments to ensure exceptional service and program delivery. The Director also manages department resources, develops staff, and supports initiatives that advance AKC's mission and strategic objectives.

• Direct and oversee the daily operations of the Sport Services Department, ensuring efficient, accurate, and responsive service to customers, clubs, breeders, exhibitors, and other stakeholders.
• Manage, coach, and develop department staff, including assigning work, conducting performance reviews, setting goals, and supporting employee development.
• Resolve complex or non-routine issues and provide guidance to staff regarding AKC policies, procedures, and program requirements.
• Oversee the administration of department programs, including Breeder of Merit, Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL), Registered Kennel Names, and registration color reviews.
• Manage the AKC Foundation Stock Service® and the recognition process for developing breeds seeking AKC recognition.
• Select and support clubs hosting Junior Regional events and ensure adherence to AKC program requirements.
• Administer veterinary scholarship and outreach programs, including presentations to veterinary schools and student organizations regarding AKC programs and responsible dog ownership.
• Collaborate with parent clubs on breed standard revisions and assist in guiding proposed changes through established AKC processes.
• Serve as Staff Liaison to the Parent Club Delegate Committee and provide support, information, and guidance to delegates and committee members.
• Lead efforts to strengthen and expand participation in junior programs and administer scholarship opportunities that encourage youth involvement in AKC sports.
• Develop and manage departmental budgets and monitor expenditures to ensure effective use of resources.

• Extensive knowledge of AKC registration policies, dog show regulations, and AKC sports and event operations.
• Strong understanding of AKC club governance, committee structures, and Robert's Rules of Order.
• Demonstrated leadership experience managing employees, projects, and operational programs.
• Strong customer service orientation and commitment to providing effective stakeholder support.
• Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills.
• Proven ability to build productive working relationships with clubs, delegates, breeders, exhibitors, and internal stakeholders.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and business systems.

This is a hybrid position that requires a minimum of 3 days per week in either our Raleigh NC office.
