UTS - Temporary Utility Plant Operator at NC State
As a Central Utility Plant Shift Operator at NC State, you’ll play a vital role in keeping our campus running smoothly by helping provide steam, hot water, and chilled water to the entire University.
In this position, you’ll work with boilers, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, and advanced control systems, developing valuable technical skills while ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operations. You’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to sustainability and safety initiatives by supporting compliance with environmental and safety standards. Working Title UTS - Temporary Utility Plant Operator at NC State
Requirements and Preferences Work ScheduleMonday-Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
Responsibilities- Other duties as needed.
- High school diploma or GED
- Ability to lift up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Ability to monitor the status of equipment and operation.
- Requires ability to inspect equipment or materials to identify the cause of errors, problems, or defects.
- Effectively and safely complete lockout–tag-outs in accordance with NCSU policy.
- Ability to identify non-standard or more complex problems with equipment and systems through inspection and maintenance.
- Must be able to resolve most issues or make recommendations for responding to more complex situations.
- Ability to understand and respond to standard questions.
- Ability to identify non-standard questions and determine the appropriate resource to consult or respond.
- Cross-train to operate and maintain steam boilers, electrical centrifugal chillers, steam-driven turbine chillers, cooling towers, auxiliary equipment, and water treatment systems within the steam generation system.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Preferred experience in operating and monitoring steam boilers and auxiliary steam/hot water equipment to ensure consistent and safe delivery of steam and hot water.
- Experience operating and monitoring chillers (electric and steam turbine driven), cooling towers, and auxiliary chilled water equipment to maintain chilled water supply.
- Experience performing routine inspections and maintenance of plant equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
- Experience assisting with monitoring and adjusting equipment to maintain emissions within regulatory compliance.
- Experience supporting water treatment processes for steam and chilled water systems.
- Ability to respond to alarms, troubleshoot operational issues, and escalate concerns to the Shift Supervisor as needed.
- Experience maintaining accurate logs and records of plant operations and maintenance activities.
