The Nurse Practitioner Preceptor serves as a clinical mentor and educator for graduate nursing students, providing hands‑on learning experiences in a real‑world healthcare setting. Preceptors play a vital role in supporting the clinical education, professional development, and competency of future nurse practitioners while collaborating with faculty to ensure student success.
Key Responsibilities- Provide supervised, real‑world clinical learning experiences for nurse practitioner students.
- Offer guidance, mentorship, and clinical expertise to support students’ development of diagnostic reasoning, assessment, and patient management skills.
- Facilitate progressive student independence by assigning appropriate patient care responsibilities based on competency.
- Review and approve student findings, diagnoses, and treatment plans prior to patient discharge.
- Communicate regularly with assigned faculty regarding student progress, concerns, or questions.
- Complete required student evaluations at mid‑term and end of the clinical rotation.
- Maintain a supportive and professional learning environment that promotes compassionate, high‑quality patient care.
- Active North Carolina license in an applicable discipline (e.g., Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Physician Assistant, or LCSW for applicable programs).
- Minimum of one year of clinical practice experience prior to precepting.
- Clinical expertise relevant to the assigned specialty area (e.g., family medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, etc.).
- Prior teaching or precepting experience.
- Strong communication and mentoring skills.
- Commitment to advancing nursing education and workforce development.
