Duke University Health System seeks to hire a Registered Nurse - Operating Room Scheduler who will embrace our mission of Transforming Lives Transforming Care.
Work hours:
4-10 hour days, 6:30am–5:00pm

- Coordinate daily OR scheduling in collaboration with the Perioperative team, including OR Schedulers, Perioperative Nurse Manager, Perioperative Director, Anesthesia Leadership, and other Support Services.
- Assist with managing and building the OR schedule; collaborate with surgeon offices and Nurse Managers to optimize the OR schedule for efficient and safe patient flow.
- Complete the first step of Universal Protocol and verify critical elements through chart reviews, including provider, location, procedure date, patient class, Case Consent Wording, ICD & CPT, laterality, positioning, anesthesia type, case classification, diagnosis codes, pre-op visit completion, and surgeon privileging confirmation.
- Lead scheduling meetings with key stakeholders; orient new hires to the department.
- Run reports and perform data analysis to maximize schedule execution.
- Use critical thinking and nursing knowledge to ensure surgical patient safety.
- Review and complete all required elements of an OR case request in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures.
- Individualize the plan of care based on assessment of special needs and comments using professional nursing judgment.
- Participate in professional development, educational activities, departmental committees, research projects, or other health-related projects as assigned.
- Act as a preceptor and support the development of other staff, including providers and their clinic staff in scheduling and block time request processes.
- Identify clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
- Adhere to applicable local, state, and federal regulations and accrediting bodies; maintain outstanding customer service and respectful relationships.
Skills And Abilities
- Knowledge of the scope of the RN, LPN, Surgical Technologist, and Advanced Practice Provider roles; knowledge of the nursing process and professional theory, practice, and procedure.
- Ability to assess perioperative nursing needs and collaborate with resources; establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Clear communication with patients, families, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, and leadership.
- Strong planning, prioritization, and organizational skills; ability to use computer systems and learn new software; document and communicate information electronically and/or on paper.
- Competence in BLS or higher life support as required; knowledge of OR procedures, infection control, and Joint Commission regulatory requirements.
- Experience in Operating Room, Epic, Optime, Perioperative environments, and scheduling.
Education
Work requires graduation from an accredited BSN program. Exception:
Registered nurses hired after July 1, 2014 without a Bachelor s degree in Nursing are expected to enroll in a BSN program within two years and complete it within five years. Nurses hired before July 1, 2014 are not required to enroll in a BSN.
Experience
Previous operating room experience required; 2+ years preferred. Prior surgeon clinic nursing or paranesthesia experience preferred.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
Current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse or current compact RN licensure to practice in North Carolina is required. BLS (or higher) certification required. Professional specialty certification preferred.
