Department Summary

The Intensive Care Unit at Duke Raleigh Campus is a 28-bed multidisciplinary ICU with a 2-1 staff to patient ratio. Our patient population includes neuro, neurovascular, cardiac conditions, neurosurgery, liver & renal, sepsis and more. Our team’s main goal is to deliver exemplary care for our patients to ensure optimal outcomes. Teamwork, open communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration are valued.

General Description

The nursing assistant (NA) is a patient care support partner with the registered nurse (RN) and/or licensed practical nurse (LPN) and performs work as delegated by the RN or LPN. The NA provides direct care to patients and assists with non-direct patient care unit coordination. The position is expected to perform basic care and comfort standards, assist the RN in caring for acutely ill patients, practice medical asepsis, respect dignity, privacy, and cultural diversity, adhere to policies and procedures, respond during emergencies, maintain the patient/family environment, perform unit upkeep, order supplies and equipment, and document patient care in the electronic health record.

The NA is typically scheduled for NCA I shifts at a minimum of 25% of the time.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for specific procedures and provide manual assistance as required.
  • Obtain and record patient data for medical records, noting and informing RN/LPN of information collected.
  • Administer treatment and personal care procedures to patients including feeding, bathing, hair care, changing clothing, nail care, bed-making, ambulation assistance, enemas, skin care, and bowel and bladder elimination; provide additional care as needed.
  • Participate in teaching activities by reinforcing teaching instructed by RN and/or providers.
  • Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations, including positioning patients, changing non-sterile dressings, and weighing patients.
  • Take and record vital signs, record I/O, apply ice bags, note and report changes in patient condition; turn, position, feed patients, and provide fresh drinking water.
  • Perform fingerstick blood glucose testing with appropriate training; document and notify RN/LPN.
  • Assist with admission, discharge, and transportation of patients; follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.
  • Collect, deliver, and conduct routine tests on patient specimens; clean assigned area and replenish supplies and equipment.
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required skills validation and attending educational offerings; support development of other staff and formal learners.
  • May perform clean dressing change for wounds older than 48 hours.
