Registered Nurse (Experienced) – Duke Raleigh Hospital Campus – Operating Room SchedulerDuke University Health System seeks to hire a Registered Nurse – Operating Room Scheduler who will embrace our mission of Transforming Lives, Transforming Care.
Work Hours and Shift4–10 hours per day, 6:30 am–5:00 pm.
Job SummaryThe OR Scheduler, Nursing works closely with the Perioperative team including OR Schedulers, the Perioperative Nurse Manager, Perioperative Director, Anesthesia Leadership and other Support Services to coordinate daily OR scheduling. The position assists with managing and building the OR schedule, collaborating with surgeon offices and Nurse Managers to optimize OR scheduling for efficient and safe patient flow.
Responsibilities- Complete the first step of the Universal Protocol.
- Schedule OR events and consistently analyze the schedule to maximize efficiency and productivity.
- Conduct chart reviews to verify critical elements (provider, location, procedure date, patient class, case consent wording, ICD & CPT codes, laterality, positioning, anesthesia type, case classification, diagnosis codes, pre‑op visit completion, and surgeon privileging confirmation).
- Lead scheduling meetings to collaborate with key stakeholders and influence operational excellence.
- Orient new hires to the department.
- Run reports and perform data analysis to maximize schedule execution.
- Use strong critical thinking, communication, and nursing knowledge to ensure surgical patient safety.
- Review and complete all required elements of an OR case request in accordance with physician orders and established policies.
- Apply professional nursing judgment to individualize the plan of care based on assessment of special needs.
- Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies and seeking appropriate educational offerings.
- Act as a preceptor and support development of other staff, including providers and their clinic staff, in the scheduling and block‑time request process.
- Identify clinical or operational performance‑improvement opportunities.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
- Knowledge of the scope of a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Surgical Technologist, and Advanced Practice Provider.
- Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process.
- Ability to assess nursing needs of perioperative patients and their families.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, establishing effective relationships.
- Strong communication skills with patients, families, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, and others.
- Strong sensory, cognitive, and fine‑motor skills to process, prioritize, and follow up information.
- Competent in BLS and other designated life‑support requirements.
- Computer proficiency and ability to learn new software programs.
- Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in the OR, including new equipment and safety protocols.
- Knowledge of infection‑control procedures and safety precautions.
- Ability to meet Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements.
Previous operating room, Epic, Optime, Periop, and scheduling experience preferred.
Minimum Qualifications EducationGraduation from an accredited BSN program is required. Registered nurses hired after July 1, 2014 without a nursing degree are expected to enroll in a BSN program within two years of their start date and complete it within five years. Registered nurses hired before July 1, 2014 are not required to enroll.
ExperiencePrevious operating room experience required; 2 + years preferred. Prior experience in surgeon clinic nursing or par anesthesia preferred.
