12-month UNC Health Rex Nurse Residency Program supports your transition to professional practice through specialty-specific orientation, mentorship, professional development, continuing education, and evidence-based practice.

Start dates are based on graduation and NCLEX completion dates.

Residents receive:

The program focuses on building clinical competence, confidence, critical thinking, clinical decision-making, leadership, and quality patient care.

24-bed Cardiac Medicine Intermediate Care Unit (7HV) provides intermediate-level care for adult and geriatric patients with cardiac conditions and complex medical co-morbidities.

Patients include those with heart failure, dysrhythmias, acute myocardial infarction, complex cardiac conditions, and those recovering from cardiac and vascular procedures.

• Specialized cardiovascular and progressive care
• Adult and geriatric patient population
• Pre- and post-cardiac and vascular procedure care
• Continuous telemetry monitoring through the Telemetry Command Center
• GE bedside cardiac monitoring in every room
• In-room computers with immediate electronic medical record access
• Strong interdisciplinary collaboration

The unit provides an excellent environment for new graduate nurses to develop assessment, critical-thinking, clinical decision-making, and cardiovascular nursing skills. Nurses collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, rehabilitation specialists, telemetry technicians, and nursing leadership.

• 1. Education
  - Participates in identifying and meeting learning needs of self. Attends education programs based on identified learning needs. With assistance, uses patient education materials relevant to patient population. Assesses readiness to learn of the patient/family/caregivers. Assesses developmental level of patient and factors affecting ability to learn.
• 2. Evaluation of Care
  - Identifies expected patient outcomes. Seeks guidance as needed in revision of plan of care. Participates in discussion with members of the interdisciplinary team in evaluation of patient care. Communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.
• 3. Implementation
  - Demonstrates competence in care of patients with complex problems, including population-appropriate physical, psychosocial, educational and safety aspects of care.
