The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest-rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The Equine & Farm Animal Technician provides comprehensive husbandry support for large animal patients, ensuring a safe, clean, and collaborative environment for both patient care and teaching. As a key member of the team, you'll contribute to the daily care of equine and farm animals while supporting the center's teaching and service mission. This role is ideal for someone who takes pride in hands-on animal care, values teamwork, and thrives in an active, service-oriented setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide daily care including feeding, watering, grooming, handling, and restraining a variety of species such as equine, bovine, caprine, ovine, and camelid patients.
- Perform physically active work for extended periods and lift up to 90 pounds on occasion, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Maintain a clean and sanitary hospital environment by adhering to established protocols, including stall cleaning, disinfecting, and waste removal.
- Operate and maintain barn and cleaning equipment; ensure tools and supplies are in good working order and follow repair schedules.
- Support hospital operations through inventory control, supply ordering, and collaboration with ancillary and clinical services.
- Participate in on-call, weekend, and holiday rotations while following all Infectious Disease protocols and safety standards.
Other Responsibilities
In addition to the core responsibilities of this role, there will be occasional opportunities to take on additional duties. Those responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Maintaining equipment and tools.
- Make minor repairs to tools.
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated skill in equine and farm animal handling and patient care within a veterinary or agricultural setting, preferably in a teaching hospital or tertiary care facility.
- Familiarity with OSHA and AAHA safety standards and hospital sanitation practices.
- Ability to work safely around sick animals, cleaning agents, gas anesthetics, and zoonotic diseases.
- Basic computer proficiency, including data entry, email, and spreadsheet use.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to maintain composure in emotionally charged or challenging situations.
NC Driver's License is required and will need to be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.
